Counselor's Corner
Hi HPE families!
Spring is the perfect time to practice some mindfulness! Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment with openness, curiosity, and kindness. It involves tuning into thoughts, feelings, sensations, and surroundings. Here are some of my favorite mindfulness strategies for kids!
- Mindful Breathing: Teach children to focus on their breath. Have them sit comfortably and close their eyes if they feel comfortable doing so. Guide them to take slow, deep breaths in through their nose and out through their mouth. Encourage them to notice the sensation of the breath as it enters and leaves their body. You can make it fun by asking them to imagine they are blowing bubbles or inflating a balloon with each breath.
- Sensory Exploration: Engage children in mindful sensory activities to help them tune into their senses. This could involve a mindful eating activity where they use all their senses to explore a piece of fruit or a small snack. Encourage them to notice the color, texture, smell, taste, and even the sound of the food as they eat it slowly and deliberately. Alternatively, you could set up a sensory bin with materials like rice, beans, or sand, and have them explore the textures mindfully with their hands.
- Nature Walk: Take children on a mindful nature walk where they can explore the outdoors with all their senses. Encourage them to notice the sights, sounds, smells, and textures of nature around them. You can make it a scavenger hunt by giving them a list of things to find, such as a certain color leaf, a smooth rock, or the sound of a bird chirping. Encourage them to walk slowly and quietly, paying attention to each step they take.
- Mindful Movement: Engage children in simple yoga or stretching exercises to help them connect their mind and body. Teach them a few basic yoga poses such as tree pose, cat-cow stretch, or child's pose, and guide them through the movements mindfully, focusing on their breath and the sensations in their body as they move. You can also play calming music in the background to enhance the experience.
- Gratitude Practice: Cultivate a sense of gratitude in children by engaging them in a daily gratitude practice. Encourage them to think of three things they are grateful for each day, whether it's a favorite toy, a fun activity they did, or spending time with loved ones. You can create a gratitude journal where they can write or draw about their blessings each day, fostering a positive mindset and appreciation for the present moment.
I hope you have a great spring break! See you soon!

Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your child will learn how to state a problem without blame or name calling. They’ll practice identifying problems in given scenarios, listen to their teacher state the problem, and then repeat the statement.
Try This at Home:
Children may be tempted to blame others when they’re upset about something. Encourage your child to avoid blame by describing what happened without focusing on who is at fault.

Recess Policy at HSE
Recess will be held outdoors whenever possible. Precipitation, sunshine, cloud cover, wind chill, temperature, etc. are all considered when a decision is made for indoor recess. In general, recess will be held indoors when it is raining, or the temperature/wind chill falls below 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Conversely, if 90 degrees Fahrenheit or higher heat index (relative humidity and temperature) is reached, the school will take special precautions for any outdoor activity and teachers will use extreme caution while monitoring students at recess. In addition, students will be provided ample amounts of water before and during recess; Recesses will be shortened or may be moved indoors at the discretion of the principal or designee; Children will be watched/monitored carefully for necessary action. These temperatures are based on recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The full recess policy can be accessed in the student handbook: https://resources.finalsite.net/images/v1691521899/hsek12inus/q7xtlrb1x9zozvwu9p61/ElementaryHandbook-APPROVED-23-24.pdf
