We want to inform you that Buchanan Community Schools has been made aware of a general Snapchat post suggesting potential violence against schools this coming Monday. While the post did not specify any particular school or location, we are taking this matter seriously.

To ensure the safety of our students and staff, we will have increased police presence at school next week. The safety of our school community remains our top priority.

We encourage everyone to report any suspicious activity or threats to school safety. We are in close collaboration with the Buchanan Police Department to address these concerns effectively. You can report incidents anonymously through the Herd Hotline at 269-409-1153 or by using the confidential reporting tool OK2Say.

Dear Valued Buchanan Community Schools’ Parents,

Buchanan Community Schools’ Parent Advisory Committee is reorganizing for the 2024-25 school year and is seeking interested parents who wish to assist the Superintendent and Board Members in making valuable improvements for our district.

Purpose of the Parent Advisory Committee is to:

1. Advise school administrators regarding school practices and concerns.

2. Serve as an information conduit for other parents regarding school matters.

3. Suggest ideas which will benefit students at Buchanan Community Schools.

4. Discuss current issues in education which may influence our students.

We are seeking parents from each elementary building and secondary buildings to serve on this district level Parent Advisory Committee. This committee will meet four times a year with the purpose of meaningful dialogue that will support effective parent involvement.

Tentative Meeting Dates:

Tuesday, October 15, 2024 from 6-7pm

Thursday, December 12, 2024 from 6-7pm

Wednesday, February 12, 2025 from 6-7pm

Tuesday, April 22, 2025 from 6-7pm

We would like to invite you to become a member of the Parent Advisory Committee. We are looking for 10-15 individuals with a diverse skill set who are willing to work collaboratively to improve our schools. Please respond to our Google Survey to register. Request For Board Member Nominations

We are excited to announce that there is a new foundation forming to support the ongoing needs of Buchanan Community Schools. A local group of volunteers has begun the process of establishing the Buchanan Community Schools Foundation. Our mission is to build a strong network of community supporters who fund the revitalization, growth and future development of Buchanan Community Schools through the collection and redistribution of resources.

Our current leadership is seeking nominations for board members who can help us support a successful launch. Our intent is to locate key members from organizations like yours, in the community, who already provide a positive impact on Buchanan Community Schools.

Our request is that you review this notice with your organization and determine if there is a volunteer from your group that would like to participate. We expect this foundation to have immediate and long-term impact on critical projects for our students, teachers and administrators. The more support we have, the better. We are looking for a total of 9-11 new board members and will fill the available spots as qualifying nominations are received.

The time commitment for board members will include a monthly meeting, active discussions with other board members to advance key initiatives, events to expand the reach of the foundation and fundraising to support the cause.

We are extremely excited about this launch. Buchanan is a fantastic community, and we know with time we will be able to fund extremely important items for Buchanan Community Schools. We hope your organization will provide a nomination for someone who can help.

In order to do that, we ask that you follow our Chain of Command process shown in the diagram. On the left side of the process chart, you will see the common areas of district programming, and then following to the right would be the next step(s) in the Chain of Command for that district program area. Please start by contacting the staff member listed in the second box of each program area. The contact information for our leadership staff members with responsibility for addressing concerns is listed at the top of the diagram. Other contact information for building staff is available on our website in the “Staff Directory” section of each building’s web page. It is expected that most issues should be able to be resolved at these initial steps in the Chain of Command.

Buchanan Community Schools is a school district located in Buchanan, Michigan. In 2020, Buchanan was named the Nicest City in America and is known for its community concerts and parades. Buchanan Community Schools has over 1500 students and over 200 employees. The school district has four schools based on grade bands, Ottawa- PreK-1, Moccasin-2-4, Buchanan Middle School 5-7, and Buchanan High School 8-12.
