Lunar New Year is one of the most important celebrations of the year among East and Southeast Asian cultures, including Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean communities, among others.

This Lunar New Year, which began on February 10, is the Year of the Dragon.

China’s Lunar New Year is known as the Spring Festival or Chūnjié in Mandarin, while Koreans call it Seollal and Vietnamese refer to it as Tết.

Tied to the lunar calendar, the holiday began as a time for feasting and to honor household and heavenly deities, as well as ancestors. The New Year typically begins with the first new moon that occurs between the end of January and spans the first 15 days of the first month of the lunar calendar—until the full moon arrives.

Thanks to all of the students who stopped by the Student Activities Office last week to celebrate Mardi Gras! Congratulations to Osvaldo Quintana (period 4), Jaden Taylor Houston (period 6), and Jesus Perez Muro (period 8), who won the king cake raffle!

Dancers, get on stage this spring with Leyden's own "So You Think You Can Dance?". If you are interested in being involved, you must audition first! To learn more, click HERE.

Audition Information:

• Wednesday, February 21st
• 3:10 PM - 4:45 PM in the West Leyden Dance Studio
• Students will be expected to perform an original choreography that is 30-45 seconds long. All styles of dance are welcome!

If you are unable to attend auditions, you can email a video of your choreography to Ms. Longstreth (llongstreth@leyden212.org) by February 21st.

Now there's even less reason to not get involved! Check off one of your New Year's resolutions as 'done' by going to a club meeting this month!
