Information For This Week
Sports Club for Monday = 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament!
Every year, all the Intermediate Schools participate in a 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament in January. At Asa Low, we have a 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament in December to determine which of our 3 on 3 teams will represent us at the District Intermediate Basketball Tournament! Our campus 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament is scheduled for tomorrow (Monday, December 16) after school.
Here are some important things parents need to know:
- The Asa Low 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament will take place from 4:15-5:15pm in the both gyms. Boys will be competing in the Boy's Gym and Girls will be competing in the Girl's Gym.
- Parents are allowed to attend to watch, but you will be required to check in with the main office. Also, parents, if you decide to attend, please remember to show good sportsmanship. Often times our coaches also have to be the referees and since they are human, they are not always perfect.
- Students can select their own team. If they do not have a team the coaches will find one for them when they arrive. Both the Asa Low Campus 3 on 3 Tournament and the Intermediate 3 on 3 Tournament are very competitive; therefore, our coaches highly suggest that students have some basketball experience. The coaches have spoken to our students about this during Pre-Athletics and PE classes.
- There are three students to a team. The winning teams go to Legacy to compete in the Intermediate School 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament on January 23. There will only be four winning teams; 5th Grade Boys, 5th Grade Girls, 6th Grade Boys, and 6th Grade Girls. Once those teams are set, the coaches will add a fourth person to each 3 on 3 team to be a sub during the district tournament.
- If a student is on one of the teams that advances to the district tournament and gets assigned In School Suspension or Out of School Suspension, they will be removed and replaced by the coaches. No exceptions!
- Again, the district tournament is on January 23. The coaches will provide more details to the winning teams going to the tournament in January.
- The campus tournament is intended to be Double Elimination; however, that may depend on the number of teams that show up after school tomorrow. If we have too many teams, it will shift to a single elimination tournament. The campus tournament will end at 5:15 tomorrow afternoon.
OK, that's all I have for now! If you any further questions, please contact Coach Gaston at adamgaston@misdmail.org
Thank you! -JS
Holiday Parties on December 19!
Parents are welcome to attend; however, you will have to ring the door bell and show your ID to get in the building. Then you will need to check in with the main office and obtain a visitor's badge before you can be allowed into the classroom area.
Also, I've had several parents ask if they can check their child out after the party and take them home early after their Holiday Party is over. The answer is yes, you may take your child home after their Holiday Party.
For more information, see the flyers posted below! Thank you!

Reminder: Please Do Not Check Out Students Between 3:30-4:00pm
Parents,
This message is intended to be a friendly reminder that the time period between 3:30 and 4:00pm is a very busy and difficult time of transition for our office staff as our campus prepares for dismissal. As a campus we are asking that if you need to pick up your student early, please do so before 3:30pm. Once we get past 3:30pm, it becomes very difficult for our entire dismissal process. Thank you for understanding!
Sincerely,
Jason Short

Jerry Knight STEM Academy
It is strange to think, but MISD's Power of Choice season is already upon us. As in past years, Jerry Knight will bring some of their 8th-grade learners to Asa Low to present their program and the opportunities it provides. This presentation will take place during 5th-grade lunch periods so our kids will not miss instruction. They will set up in the library and invite interested 5th graders to bring their lunches and eat while their learners share information about Jerry Knight and they will answer all kinds of questions. They will also distribute some information to pass along to parents. They are coming to Asa Low the week of December 9-13! If you have any questions about Jerry Knight STEM Academy you can contact Ryan Trowbridge at ryantrowbridge@misdmail.org. He is Jerry Knight's Innovation Specialist and can answer any questions you may have! Additionally, I will forward any information I receive out to all of you as soon as I receive it. Thank you!

Overall Goals for Our Students This Year
Our Goals for Our Students This School Year!
This is a reminder of our overall goals for our students this year:
At Asa Low, we feel that students' classroom grades are very important and should be a reflection of what our students have learned regarding the state standards that we are required to teach. As a group of education professionals, we made a collective commitment this summer that all assignments taken for grades will be meaningful and reflect the students' understanding and level of mastery of the state standards.
As important as grades are, we have three main overall goals we want for our students this year:
- We want ALL of our students to learn at high levels.
- We want ALL of our students to be good humans.
- We want ALL of our students to be resilient and develop grit.
Here is what that looks like on our end:
- We want ALL of our students to learn at high levels.
- Students perform at or above grade level in Math, RLA, Science, and Social Studies by the end of 2024-2025
- Students make at least one year of academic growth in all subjects
- All students master essential, essential standards
- We want ALL of our students to be good humans
- Be kind to other students
- Get along with other students
- Work together as a team to accomplish goals
- "I don't win if you don't win" mentality
- Assume Positive intent from other students and teachers
- We want ALL of our students to be resilient and develop grit
- Try hard
- Don't give up when it gets difficult
- Keep going no matter what
That's it! That is what we want for our kids overall this year. If we can accomplish these goals, we will not have to worry about STAAR testing this year! STAAR testing will take care of itself. Parents, please help us keep our focus on and ultimately accomplish these goals!

6th Grade Advanced Classes
Advanced Classes - Student and Parent Commitments
Mansfield ISD Advanced courses provide students the rigor and depth of instruction to prepare them for Advanced Placement courses and college. There are many benefits of enrollment in Advanced/ AP classes including development of strong study skills, an understanding of the college regimen, the potential of earning college credits while in high school.
If your 6th grader is taking even just one Advanced course this school year, PLEASE COMPLETE ONE FORM PER STUDENT BY FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27th.
Thank you!
Asa Low Student Management and Discipline Plan
Dress Code
We have had several students having dress code issues this week. The biggest issues we have had are shorts/skirts not being long enough. The shorts/skirts have to at mid-thigh. When a child holds their arms down by their sides, mid-thigh is where their finger tips end. Also, when students wear leggings/yoga style pants, they must wear a top that completely covers their bottom.
Thank you for helping us with this!
