7th Grade ELAR
7th Grade RLA has stepped into A REALITY CHECK as we start our new unit full of analysis, short constructed responses and ECR(extended constructed response). We are also hard at work on independent reading and living vicariously through our fiction novels. We reigned victoriously on our first Revising and Editing CBA and working hard to get through our Reading CBA!
8th Grade ELAR
8th Grade ELAR has officially launched the “Thrill of Horror” unit. Our Essential Question is “Why Do We Sometimes Like to Feel Frightened? Our unit opener will be a short story by controversial author Edgar Allan Poe. Students will begin reading Tell-Tale Heart- one of Poe's iconic pieces related by an unnamed narrator who endeavors to convince the reader of the narrator's sanity while simultaneously describing a murder the narrator committed. Following Poe’s horror piece, students will begin a Tell-Tale Heart 1 Pager followed by Phobia Projects. Students will pick a phobia they themselves have, or one their choice, and research it along with class presentations. The Thrill of Horror unit is definitely one of the student favorites in 8th grade. Swing by any of the 8th grade ELAR teachers' classrooms to view some of the upcoming Phobia projects, if you are brave enough!
Math
7th Grade Math
Rates, Ratios, & Proportions
Students will be able to calculate unit rates, use proportions to calculate equivalent rates and ratio, use proportions to convert units within a measurement system, and make predictions using proportions.
Similar Shapes
Students will be able to use attributes of similar shapes to set up proportions in order to solve for scale factor and missing side lengths.
45 minutes of i-Ready each week (at home) GoMath Books are coming home and should be left at home
CBA #4- Proportionality November 1 and 2
8th Grade Math
On behalf of the 8th grade math team, we would like to share some important updates for the upcoming grading period.
Academic schedule:
· Before fall break, we finished our unit on Linear relationships and the current unit of study is Linear functions. Students are learning how two variables represent a linear relationship as being proportional or non-proportional. We aim to incorporate some real-world scenarios to help students recognize how this concept relates to their daily activities. Please try to periodically ask your student to explain to you something they learned in class; this would help keep the content fresh in their mind for class the next day.
Important upcoming dates:
· The next major grade test will be on the week of November 4th. Students need to be studying their notes daily, completing their assignments on Schoology, and attending tutorials if they seek additional help.
· The 1st interim assessment of the district has been scheduled for November 14th and 15th. This test is treated like the state test and is important for your student to perform their best.
Miscellaneous:
· Supplies are low! We mathematicians make sure our students are successful by keeping a notebook of all their notes and guided practice for each unit. This requires a lot of glue, and we are in need. Please ensure your student has supplies to help them be successful in class.
· Laptop devices are required for students to be at their best academically. If your student does not have a device it is going to have negative effect on their overall performance. Please let us know if there is anything prevented your student from receiving a device.
· IReady is still a requirement for students to engage in weekly. Students are required to login and complete lessons for at least 45 minutes a week. This will be counted as a homework grade.
Science
We will be starting CBA #2 from November 11th to 15th. This assessment will cover TEK, 7.7ABCD. Additionally, the exam will touch upon Newton's First Law of Motion, an essential principle in physics. Students must know this law and its application to various real-life scenarios.
The District Fall AIA Science Assessment window is December 16th -20th. The test covers all first-semester TEKs.
To further support your child's learning, we encourage you to discuss these topics at home, complete assignments, attend tutorials, and participate in in-class labs and station activities. Exploring the practical applications of these concepts can significantly enhance your child's understanding and appreciation of the subject.
8th Grade Science
Our 8th graders have started an exciting journey into Physics! Over the next few weeks, we will focus on:
- Energy: Comparing potential and kinetic energy, and exploring how energy is transferred and transformed in everyday scenarios.
- Motion: Using formulas to calculate average speed and analyzing distance vs. time graphs to understand how things move.
- Force: Investigating the concepts of work, force, and the difference between balanced and unbalanced forces, plus applying Newton’s Laws of Motion to real-life examples.
Important Dates:
- Science Fair Projects Due: Nov. 22nd (start planning soon!)
- Science Fair Awards Night: Dec. 12th
Exam Dates:
- CCA #2 (Energy & Motion): Nov. 1st
- CBA #2 (Energy, Motion, Force): Nov. 19th
- District Interim Assessment: Dec. 16th-20th
Library News
The Albright Library staff would like to encourage you to look through the Alief HUB with your student! There are many great resources available free for all of our Alief students and their families. The Destiny Discover app provides students the ability to search our physical library catalog and put books on hold as well as access to hundreds of digital e-books they can read right from their device!
The Digital Resources folder has multiple great sites as well, many provided through our partnership with the Houston Public Library! In addition to electronic and audio books, students (and families) can also view streaming television and movies, music, language courses, tutoring and more all with one log-in! Please see the graphic below for more info on how to access all of these great resources!
The library is also open after school for students to read, work on homework or use our games and Makerspace. We are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 5:15! Late busses are provided for students who are bus riders. If your child is interested in signing up, please have them check out the link on our Library Schoology page.
Tech News
Students are expected to come to school every day with their 1:1 device, the charger, the case, and personal wired headphones (no AirPods). Devices should be charged the night before to ensure a successful day in class.
