Update on Belmont/Thomas Intersection Changes
Dear Thomas Middle School and Olive-Mary Stitt Elementary Families,
I hope this message finds you well. As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring student safety during arrival and dismissal times, we’ve been working closely with the District's traffic engineering consultant to evaluate the Belmont Avenue and Thomas Street intersection.
Based on their expert recommendations, we will be implementing a new approach at the intersection starting Monday, December 2, right after Thanksgiving break. The crossing guard will guide students across only three legs of the intersection, as highlighted in green in the attached map.
Why Are We Trying This?
This adjustment is a proactive measure recommended by the District's traffic engineering consultant to improve efficiency and safety. The benefits include:
- Shorter Crossing Distances: Each controlled crossing will span two lanes instead of three, reducing complexity.
- Smoother Traffic Flow: The right-turn lane from eastbound Thomas Street onto Belmont Avenue southbound will not need to be stopped twice, decreasing potential congestion.
What’s Next?
We are also pleased to share that we are finalizing an agreement with Andy Frain Services to provide a dedicated crossing guard for this intersection. We are optimistic that this service will begin on the same day, Monday, December 2.
We will closely monitor how this new configuration works and gather feedback to determine if any additional adjustments are needed. Your cooperation and support are crucial in ensuring this pilot is successful.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we implement these changes to enhance the safety and experience for all students and families. Should you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Warm regards,
Dr. Brian Kaye
