Schweitzer Newsletter April 2024
Happy Summer!
Albert Schweitzer families,
What a busy year it has been! As we joined together today to watch our 2023-2024 Slideshow, we were reminded of the many activities and events that were part of our learning journey this year. From our Back-to-School Night picnic to our Winter and Spring Concerts to our Art Shows, Phillie Phanatic visit and PTO Events and Field Day, we rocked it this year!
We also worked hard this year to meet the needs of students in academics, behavior, and in areas of social/emotional needs for students. Teachers targeted skills and goals during small group math and reading groups, WIN (What I Need) and core instruction. Students can be proud of their growth this year and should continue practicing over the summer months.
I want you to RELAX and HAVE FUN this summer.....but I also wants students to continue with learning. Be sure to read below on the many Summer Learning opportunities for math and reading. It is critical so that we can hit the ground running in September with our academics!
Until then, enjoy and have a safe and happy summer!
Dr. Amy Orlando
Principal
Trimester 3 Progress Reports Available in Home Access
Trimester 3 Progress Reports are available online when you log into Home Access. Students also should have come home with a copy of their final Progress Report for the year. Please discuss your child's progress with him/her and review summer learning opportunities offered through the district.
Summer Learning Opportunities
As we plan for the end of the school year, we are finalizing plans for Summer Learning Opportunities for all Elementary Students. It is important to encourage children to engage in both reading and math activities throughout the summer to reduce the “summer slide.”
Summer slide is the loss of academic skills and knowledge over the course of a lengthy break. To ensure students are engaged in learning during the summer break, the following activities and incentives have been planned for all elementary students.
Summer Reading:
The Neshaminy Elementary Canvas Summer Reading Course is perfect to keep students’ reading skills polished during the break from school. All students received an invitation to the 2024 Summer Reading Canvas Course. Please log in to Canvas with your child at home to accept the course and review the information.
Once in the 2024 Summer Reading Canvas Course you will find:
- Summer Reading Parent Letter
- Elementary Summer Reading Kickoff Night Webinar Recording
- Summer Reading Challenge and Directions
- Summer Reading Road Trip Map
- Elementary Summer Reading Interactive List
- Sora Tutorial Video
- Sora Login Directions
- Elementary Summer Reading FAQs
Neshaminy continues to make the Elementary Summer Reading lists accessible through the Sora app. found within the Canvas course outlined above. With Sora, you can get free eBooks and audio books to enjoy at home over the summer. For quick access to the information outlined above, feel free to access the Summer Reading Newsletter.
Summer Learning with i-Ready:
In addition to the 2024 Summer Reading Course and challenge, Neshaminy has extended student i-Ready access into the summer. Using i-Ready My Path students will be provided with personalized instruction throughout the summer. All students can continue to access I-Ready using Clever throughout the Summer until August 10, 2024. On August 12, 2024, we will begin preparing for the new school year so the program will not be available until the start of school.
As a District, we are encouraging students to complete reading and math lessons on their individual i-Ready My Path throughout the summer. Students are encouraged to spend thirty minutes a week in both Reading and Math with a goal of completing ten lessons in each area. A My Path Tracker is included in the newsletter for your child to use throughout the summer.
For any family that would prefer access to printable packets this summer, grade level Math activity packets and Reading Bingo Boards are once again included in our Summer Newsletter linked below for access throughout the summer.
Neshaminy's 2024 Elementary Summer Newsletter
The newsletter includes access to the i-Ready My Path Tracker, printables, and a few additional activities. The Summer Learning Opportunities outlined above as well as in the newsletter will provide our elementary students with a variety of reading and math activities to close the gaps as well as challenge them in preparation for the upcoming school year.
4th Grade Move Up Ceremony
On Wednesday, June 12, fourth grade students participated in a special Move Up Day Celebration. Individual and group awards were given, Dr. Orlando and Mrs. Kelly (Principal of Carl Sandburg) spoke, and students had a traditional roll call by homeroom with each student's name read. It was a wonderful morning that was well-attended with Schweitzer families. We wish all of our fourth grade students luck and lots of love as they move on to their middle school journey. We will miss you!
Important Title I Information
As a Title I school, it's important that we keep families and our school community well informed about activities and important information related to Title I.
Spring Concert 2024
3rd and 4th Grade students performed for parents and family on Wednesday, May 8, 2024. Performances included the Band, Orchestra, & Chorus. Students played songs to a full house!
Fourth Grade Dance: Reach for the Stars Hollywood Style
4th grade students at Albert Schweitzer Elementary danced the night away with DJ Milky Way and their friends at their 4th grade celebration dance on Friday, May 17th. The theme for this year’s graduates is ‘Reach for the Stars,’ and the students did just that with a ‘Hollywood Casual’ dress theme. There was a photo booth, favors, and lots of delicious food and treats. Oh what a night!
BINGO Night a Success!
The Albert Schweitzer cafeteria was full with families testing their luck at BINGO Night! With over 39 basket winners, Neshaminy swag, and ultimate prize baskets for the 10 Bingo came cards, it was fun had by all with LOTS of winners of the night! Thank you for participating and supporting our PTO. Funds from this event will go toward supporting grade-level Field Trips.
Albert Schweitzer Art Show
Students and families explored the hallways to view the amazing artwork they completed in art class with Mrs. Todd. Items selected for the district art show were also on display. Student artwork for the District Art Show was also out for families to see. Congratulations, artists!

Staff Appreciation Week-Thank you PTO!
The week of May 6th was Staff Appreciation Week! The Albert Schweitzer PTO had a special Circus-Themed week for staff including bagels & a light breakfast, a Wawa-catered lunch, and sweet desserts. They are using PTO money raised throughout the year to honor our Schweitzer Staff! We are proud to be a part of the GREATEST SCHOOL ON EARTH!
Field Day at Schweitzer!
Albert Schweitzer participated in Field Day on Friday, May 17th. Thanks to Mr. Mazurkiewicz and our SWPBIS Committee, the students enjoyed an inflatable Obstacle Course this year as one of the rotations. The blue team came out with a victory. The school mascot, Leo the Lion even showed up. SO MUCH FUN!
Albert Schweitzer FUN RUN
Students and families raised over $900 for Albert Schweitzer by doing the FUN RUN. Schweitzer students and staff used the Carl Sandburg track to get sunshine and steps in on a beautiful day!
Retirements-Congratulations Mrs. Mela & Mrs. Sroba
We wish Mrs. Alisa Mela and Mrs. Barb Sroba relaxation and happiness in their retirement! Mr. Wells (25 Years) & Mrs. Mancini (30 Years) also received Service Awards.
Mrs. Hanley's Third Graders Celebrate with an End-of-Year Oscar party!
Ms. Hanley's third grade class celebrated the end of a fun and exciting year! The star-studded event included fun activities like Charades and Oscar Ring Toss. Students created their own stars for a F4 Hollywood Walk of Fame, posed for red carpet photos, and signed autographs for all of their adoring fans! It was an event to remember!
Ms. Flynn's First Graders Celebrate End-of-Year Farm Fun!
As part of first grade’s Project Based Learning, the students completed two Farm Themed projects. For the first project, the class learned about how farmers grow, transport and sell their crops. They demonstrated this learning by making a Farm to Table Quadrorama. For their second project, students engineered a shade structure for their farm animal figurines. They had the choice of a sheep, cow or chicken. We used the school’s 3D printer to print the farm animal figurines.
After students shared their projects, they performed Farm-Themed Reader’s Theatre Skits for the families. This was followed by an Ice Cream Social and End of the Year Slide Show. As part of the celebration, the class was encouraged to wear their Farm Animal T-shirts that we made for our Field Trip to Snipes farm in May.
Important Vaccination Reminders
VACCINATON REQUIREMENT REMINDER
In 2017, Pennsylvania's Department of Health established requirements for school vaccinations. Please review this document from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and consult with your child’s healthcare provider. Communication from the District will continue as a reminder of this PA Department of Health requirement.
District Policy 203 requires that “a certificate of immunization shall be maintained as part of the health record for each student, as required by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.” Further, the Policy states that “a student who has not been immunized per state regulations shall not be admitted to or permitted to attend district schools unless exempted for medical or religious reasons or provisionally admitted by the Superintendent or designee after beginning a multiple dose vaccine series and submitting proof of immunization or a medical certificate on or before the fifth school day of attendance.”
The requirements allow for the following exemptions: medical reason, religious belief, or philosophical/strong moral or ethical conviction. Even if your child is exempt from immunizations, he or she may be excluded from school during a vaccine-preventable disease outbreak.
Communication from the District will continue as a reminder of this PA Department of Health and Policy 203’s requirements. Please contact your child’s School Nurse with questions.
