Teaching & Learning
Manie Musicale Begins Week of March 3 - 7th
Manie Musicale is an annual bracket-style competition for students and teachers of French. Similar to March Madness basketball in the United States, participants try to predict which of 16 francophone (from French-speaking countries) songs will be the most popular. It has been popular in French classrooms since 2017.)
Once the tournament starts, voters decide which song will advance to the next round until we have a champion. The best part? Students learn French while having fun with students from all over the world. Want to join the fun? You can find the playlists on Apple Play, Spotify or You Tube.
Check out the Hype Video and the You Tube List of Songs below! Which song do you think will win the bracket?
Positivity Project: This Week's Theme: Humility
This week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Humility. Humility means not seeking attention and letting your actions speak for themselves. Humble people understand their abilities and achievements without underestimating them. They can admit mistakes, accept advice, and are open to new ideas. They don't show off their successes or possessions.
Developing humility helps people reflect on how they can improve and work well with others. It allows them to grow and become valuable team members.
Pitch Competition
Students in Mr. Burwitz's Business classes have exciting opportunities ahead with upcoming Youth Entrepreneurship (YE) competitions designed to inspire creativity, innovation, and business development.
Students looking to develop their business ideas can participate in the Genesee Youth Entrepreneurship “Investor Pitch” Competition. Local school entries were due to Genesee ISD by 9:00 p.m. on Monday, February 17, 2025. This virtual competition allows students to pitch their business ideas via recorded video submissions, with the goal of fostering an entrepreneurial mindset and awarding start-up funds to promising ventures.
Congratulations to FHS student Owen O'Leary who took 3rd place in the Investor Pitch Competition with his Snow Safe Video. Owen won $50 at the building level and $300 at the GISD level for his efforts. Great job!!!
Another exciting challenge is the Zillion Solutions Competition – 2025, hosted by UM-Flint. Students can enter multiple business ideas individually or in groups by February 27, 2025.
Participants have the chance to win Amazon e-gift cards, refine their ideas, and compete for a $2,000 grand prize at UM-Flint. The top three high school semi-finalists will receive $100 e-gift cards, with seven honorable mentions earning $50 e-gift cards. One finalist will be selected to move forward in the competition, with a shot at additional cash prizes, including a fan favorite award.

Work Permits
Under 16 years: https://www.michigan.gov/leo/bureaus-agencies/ber/wage-and-hour/work-permits
Age 16–17 yrs: https://www.michigan.gov/leo/bureaus-agencies/ber/wage-and-hour/work-permits
- Beginning April 2, 2025, HB 5594 will change work-hour restrictions for 14- and 15-year-olds to align with federal law, limiting them to 3 hours per school day, 18 hours per school week, and 40 hours per non-school week, with work allowed only between 7 AM and 7 PM (or 9 PM from May 31 until Labor Day).
- Effective on or before Friday, October 2, 2026, the process for issuing and revoking minor work permits will shift away from schools to the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) through a new statewide online registration system.
- There will be some additional, minimal process for employers and minors (or their parents), as well as a new database of authorized youth employers available online, but that process will be handled entirely by LEO once they take over the work permit system.
- MASSP has been in contact with LEO about this shift and anticipates a detailed implementation guide from the state later this winter as the first effective date approaches.

Spring Break Food Programming - St. Jude's Episcopal Church
For those on a tight budget, Spring Break can put a damper on a family’s food budget when your children are home during the day. St. Jude’s Church can help. We would like to provide the children in your family with a week’s supply of breakfast and lunch groceries to help your family bridge the gap for meals your child would normally receive during that week.
The Spring Break Food Distribution is at St. Jude’s Church (106 E. Elizabeth St. at the corner of S. Leroy St. and Elizabeth St.) on Saturday, March 29th between 9 am and 3pm. We are excited about partnering with Fenton, Lake Fenton and Linden schools to help people in our community. There are no pre-requisites for the program, just show up (if you have a reusable grocery bag you could bring it along). We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, March 29th.
If transportation to St. Jude’s is an issue for you, please let us know and we can arrange to have the groceries delivered. Simply call the church office at 810-629-5681 and let us know how many children there are in your family and the delivery location.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at the number above.
Inclement Weather Season - Message from Superintendent
Inclement Weather Season - Message from Superintendent
With the holiday season upon us, it's that time of year when we start preparing for possible inclement weather and the possibility of school cancelation. Please take time to plan for what you and your family will do in the event we have to cancel school. The district will always attempt to make decisions in time for you to use your plans optimally; however, sometimes with mother nature and the weather patterns in Michigan it doesn't always go as we'd all appreciate.
Please take a look below at the process for a weather cancelation and understand that we try our best to ensure student safety above all else.
A. We monitor the weather, and if severe weather is predicted, as superintendent, I along with the help of our transportation/operations department, local road commission and law enforcement evaluate potential issues.
B. As superintendent, I collaborate with Genesee County Superintendents to make decisions based on the road conditions for our area currently and/or in the near future.
C. We as a district will notify designated individuals in the event of a school closure to then disseminate information as quickly as possible.
D. Families can check: the district website, messaging through our FAPS app to phones in the form of voice, text message, email message, district Facebook, and news stations (ABC 12, WNEM 5, NBC 25, Detroit Fox2).
When the weather breaks and road conditions are in question, remember to leave early and drive slowly. Also, ensure your contact information is updated with your school so the district can provide the most efficient communication.
As we enter the winter doldrums and students/families spend more time indoors, cabin fever sets in. Please remind students they have access to the Counseling Office and Easter Seals at Fenton High School when they are struggling academically, socially, or emotionally.
For more information, please call the FHS Counseling Secretary, Kim Stapp at (810) 591-2612 or email kstapp@fentonschools.org.
