The Buzz
SUMMER TERM - 2ND MAY 2024
Message from the Executive Headteacher
Welcome to May! The year is flying along and we will soon be thinking about transition. If your child is moving to year 3 or planning on joining Reception or Nursery, please ensure you have accepted the places offered before the place is withdrawn.
Following the visit by the enthusiastic Nerys Pearce I must say a big thank you to everybody who donated towards Sports for Schools; we raised a total of £2,953! This enables us to buy lots of fantastic new sports equipment that the whole school will benefit from.
Year 1 children very much enjoyed the visit to Brooklands and I can't thank HISNA enough who supported the cost of this visit.
Following the success of MAG week in EYFS will have invited our DUGs (Dads, Uncles and Grandpas) to come into school. The form was sent out earlier this week and we have already had a very good response so please sign up if you are able to.
Finally, as ever it falls to me to remind all the parents who drive to school and park that they should do this with consideration for our neighbours and other road uses. Parking on double yellow lines is illegal if you are not in the car and causes blockages and is a danger to pedestrians. As the weather slowly improves, it would be wonderful to leave the car at home or park further away and get a few steps in during the morning drop off.
Enjoy the long weekend when it arrives.

🟨 Nursery
The sun is beginning to show itself at last and we have loved playing outside in our garden area. The garden is beginning to look so beautiful and the trees and shrubs we planted are looking stronger by the day. We have caterpillars in the classroom that we are watching closely as we remember what we learned about the lifecycle of the butterfly. We will keep you updated on how the caterpillars are changing.
This week our focus book is Goldilocks and the Three Bears and as well as enjoying retelling the story we have learned about size in maths. We have been using mathematical vocabulary to describe the size of our teddy bears and other objects in the classroom and compare them and order them by size. We have also enjoyed watching the Goldilocks and the Three Bears ballet whilst we have had our drink and fruit.
We are singing so beautifully in our singing assembly with reception children that Mrs Cook has commented on how wonderful we sound.
Time to Talk Nursery
We all know how important talking at home is for exposing children to a wide range of vocabulary and ideas. This all helps them with their reading and to become future writers. Each week we will share an idea with you for 'talk homework' with your child.
We have been reading the story 'Goldilocks and the three bears' this week and talking about characters in the story. At home please ask your child who their favourite character was from the story and why.
🟥 Reception
Our focus this term is 'Traditional Tales.' This week, we have been reading 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears.' We talked about the different characters in the story and how they might be feeling. We also did some hot seating, some of the children became the characters and we asked some questions. We talked about what a question was and used our question words: who, what, when, why, where and how.
Reception started 'Drawing Club' this week! We read through the story 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears' and the children had to use their imagination to draw one of the characters and what they thought they might look like. The children challenged themselves to write some words too!
Phonics: We have continued to recap all the sounds that we have learnt so far and have also looked at the sound 'tch.' We practiced the spelling 'ing' and talked about some words we know with 'ing.' Our handwriting sounds this week are qu, sh and ng.
Maths: This week we have been learning about using our fingers to represent different patterns within 5. We looked at subitising and using our knowledge to work out how many objects there are without counting. We also looked at hiding different objects and working out how many were missing.

🟦 Year 1
Year 1’s visit to Brooklands last week was great fun! The sun was shining and the children enjoyed taking part in scavenger hunts, aeroplane making as well as a ‘trip’ on Concorde. They had great fun exploring various cars, bikes, buses and planes, identifying how these have evolved over time into the different modes of transport we have today. Please take a look at some photos of the day on the year 1 ‘Home Support’ page which can accessed via the school website.
We have been focusing on the creatures featured in our new focus text, ‘The Ugly Five’ by Julia Donaldson, in English this week. We have been creating or own expanded noun phrases by pairing adjectives and nouns to describe the creatures, ready to use in our own recount of the story.
We have been focusing on weight and mass in maths this week. We have been holding objects to compare them, using the language of ‘heavier’ or ‘lighter’ and then used balance scales to check our comparisons. We noticed that the heavier object is lower on the balance scale, and that the scales are balanced when the mass of two objects is the same. We then measured the mass of various objects around the classroom using cubes, with the number of cubes on one side telling us the mass of the object on the other side.
In history, we have been thinking about what it means to be a monarch. We thought about monarchs of the past, and discussed what we thought would make a ‘good’ monarch. We then discussed what laws and rules we would introduce if we were a monarch of the past.
This week in Science, we have been identifying and naming a variety of common animals and investigating their diets. We learnt what it means to be a carnivore, herbivore and omnivore and sorted our animals into the relevant group according to what they eat. We then thought of other animals and discussed what category we thought these would fall in.
In art, we have been using a range of different paper folding techniques to create our own ‘playgrounds’, and in PE lessons, we have been developing our agility and coordination skills and throwing with accuracy. We have been exploring bending low and pushing off quickly to change direction, and facing your body and target arm towards the target to improve our throwing accuracy.
🟩 Year 2
We have been busy authors this week writing our very own stories based on our focus book 'The Tiger Child' but with one key difference, we are writing a story called 'The Wolf Child.' In our writing we have told the story of how wolves became dogs and began to live with people. We have worked really hard writing our own stories.
In Maths we have continued to look at Fractions and how they represent a part of a whole. We have looked at finding units and non unit fractions.
In Science this term we have been learning about living things and their habitats. This week we have spent some time exploring our habitat in school to find living and non living things. We have thought carefully about which things have never been alive and which ones are currently alive. We used our knowledge of classification to organise our findings.
In Art we have been exploring texture by applying our knowledge of printing. We have created a patterned background taking inspiration from the variety of textures we found in natural resources. To create our patterned background we used a wide range of resources. Next we will begin to develop this texture through a collage of The Tiger Child.
We are very excited for our upcoming Explorer Day on Wednesday 22nd May. Please see the letter sent out this week for further information. Children are invited to dress up as explorers for the day and please begin sending in resources as soon as possible.
The well being and safety of our children is everyone's responsibility. If you have concerns about a child please contact SPA on 547 5008 or out of hours on 0208 744 2442.
