For the Week of May 13, 2024
Dear Families,
It's Seniors' Last Week! It seems like just yesterday that we were kicking off the first day of the 2023-24 school year, and now we are in the final week of school for the Class of 2024! We are so proud of these students! We hope that they enjoy every moment of these final days of high school. On Friday, we will celebrate them with a final walk-through in their caps and gowns, through both the elementary and the MS/HS buildings. Then after graduation, they will hold their annual senior cookout, followed by the first ever HS field day! We want to send them off in style. Congratulations, Class of 2024 - your success is a testament to your strength, determination, and hard work!
Camp Summer School & More Summer Learning Opportunities
Planning is underway for exciting and educational summer programming at Tekonsha Elementary School! We will be offering summer programming for the month of June! Space is limited, so please sign up soon! All registrations need to be returned by Friday, May 17. Transportation is not provided, so students will need to be dropped off and picked up daily to participate. Sign up forms can also be downloaded below!
In addition to Camp Summer School, Tekonsha Elementary students will each be receiving a Think Stretch summer workbook with academic activities to complete all summer. Students will also be receiving books in the mail throughout the summer as part of the Kids Read Now program.
Field Trip Fun at the Zoo
On Friday, May 10, students in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade enjoyed their annual end of year field trip with a visit to the Potter Park Zoo in Lansing, MI. The weather was absolutely beautiful, and students had the opportunity to walk around and learn about a variety of different animals. A highlight was petting the goats! Thank you to the Tekonsha PTO for funding this experience for our students!
Blashfield Gets Pinned!
On Wednesday, May 8th, Kellogg Community College (KCC) hosted the Spring EMS Pinning Ceremony. Tekonsha High School Senior Emmitt Blashfield was among the candidates that were honored. This year, Emmitt has been a part of the EMT Basic Program at the Calhoun Area Career Center (CACC), offered in collaboration with KCC. This program is the entry point for individuals who are interested in working on the ambulance in the pre-hospital setting, those interested in a career where they need to be trained as a first responder, or students that may have an interest in becoming a paramedic. Emmitt was also recognized with an Outstanding EMT Candidate Award! Congratulations Emmitt on this accomplishment!
Senior Prank
The Class of 2024 had a bit of fun last week causing chaos in all of the classrooms. It was like a day at the beach for them! Don’t worry, it was all in good fun for their senior prank! The best part was after all of the laughs and shock wore off, they took the time to clean up ALL of the mayhem!
Senior Spotlight
Mackenzie Knapp
Mackenzie Knapp is the daughter of Melinda Downey, Brad Downey, and Jason Knapp. Her siblings are Destiny King and Kaden Knapp. She has attended Tekonsha Schools for six years. Mackenzie selected Mrs. Henry as her favorite staff member. “I selected Mrs. Henry because I feel like she was the first staff member I really became close with and she has coached me through the sports I have played, and after I stopped playing, she still allowed me to be a part of the team helping out and doing stats, so she was just always a staff member who stuck beside me no matter what and continues to believe in me and who has helped form my tenacity as it is today.” During her years in high school, Mackenzie has been involved in basketball, yearbook, and served as a class officer. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and the FFA through the Calhoun Area Career Center. After graduation, Mackenzie plans to get an associates in biology at KCC, then continue on to either study wildlife biology or vet science at a university. Her advice to underclassmen is “High-school is hard, but you are still training yourself for the real and professional world so, please just stop wearing pajamas and apply yourself.”
Marcos Sanchez
Marcos Sanchez is an exchange student from Spain that has been attending Tekonsha High School this year. His parents are Ana Zarco and Felix Sanchez. His American host parents are Annette and Caleb Wheeler. His siblings are Iñigo and Caterina. He selected Mr. Kinnison as his favorite teacher because, “we have a good relationship.” At Tekonsha, Marcos has played football, basketball and baseball. Back home in Spain, he also plays soccer and tennis. After he graduates, he will return to Spain to finish his high school studies. In his future, he hopes to become a teacher in the same school as his dad and eventually get married and have three kids! His advice to underclassmen is “Enjoy because time goes flying.”
Talia Ulleg
Talia Ulleg is the daughter of Phylis and Bill Ulleg. Her siblings are Alex, Jazmen, and Blanca Ulleg. She has attended Tekonsha Schools for the last nine years. Her most influential teacher is Mr. Young because, “He has always helped me.” During her four years in high school, Talia has been involved in student council, basketball, softball, and cheer. After graduation, she plans to work at the Calhoun County jail and go to KCC for criminal justice before transferring to Western Michigan University to study psychology and criminology. Her advice to the underclassmen is to attend CACC! “CACC is a life changer and it’s just school. There’s more to life.”
Austin Campbell
Austin Campbell is the son of Erica and Rob Campbell. His sister is Savannah. He has attended Tekonsha Schools for the last eight years. He selected Mrs. (Layne) Fouty as his most influential teacher. “She always influenced me to do better and be optimistic and look at the brighter side of every situation and keeps me on task and helps me with work and things like what when she didn't even have to.” In school, Austin has been involved in baseball, band, and is part of the welding program at the CACC. After graduation, Austin plans to continue in the field of welding. His advice to underclassmen is simple, “Don’t procrastinate.”
