Principal Update HHS 11-4-24
An International Baccalaureate World School
Greetings from your Principals!
November marks American Indian Heritage Month, a time to recognize and honor the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of Native American communities. Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing resources and activities to help our students learn about and celebrate the history and heritage of Indigenous peoples. Together, we can deepen our appreciation for these vital cultural stories that enrich our community. Please take a few minutes to review this week’s update. Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
In service,
Your HHS Admin Team!
Approaches To Teaching ✅
Approaches to Teaching - Learning Through Inquiry
In all IB programs, we focus on teaching through inquiry. As inquirers, we want our students at HHS to develop curiosity and the skills they need to learn independently. In our classrooms, students practice inquiry in different ways. Sometimes they work on structured tasks with teacher guidance; other times, they create their own questions and explore solutions. Inquiry-based learning means students are active, asking questions, and engaging with each other, while teachers guide them to find answers themselves.
Through activities like problem-solving, projects, and hands-on learning, students build inquiry skills that help them become thoughtful, independent learners.

Daylight Saving Time Ended
Early Sunday morning, we turned our clocks back one hour, marking the end of Daylight Saving Time. With this shift, I want to remind everyone to exercise additional caution on the roads.
Safety Reminders
Studies indicate that traffic accidents often increase following time changes, particularly in the days and weeks afterward. The risk tends to rise around dusk during the fall, and adjusting to a new sleep schedule can lead to fatigue.
Crosswalk Safety and Driving Awareness
As we adjust to the changes in daylight hours, I encourage parents to discuss the following points with their high school students:
Crosswalk Safety: Remind students to use designated crosswalks and remain vigilant, especially in low-light conditions.
Minimize Distractions: Emphasize the importance of staying focused while driving, avoiding phone use and other distractions.
Maintain Sleep Schedules: Encourage a consistent sleep routine to help students adapt to the time change and stay alert throughout the day.
Thank you for your continued support in keeping our students and community safe as we transition into this new season.

Cognia Accreditation Survey Open ✅
Help Shape the Future of Huron High School. WE NEED YOUR INPUT
What is Cognia Accreditation?
Cognia Accreditation is a process that helps schools improve the quality of education they provide. It evaluates how well we are meeting the needs of our students and how we can grow and succeed as a school. This year, Huron High School is undergoing this accreditation process to ensure we are providing the best learning environment possible.
As part of this process, we want to hear from you! Your feedback is important to us. We encourage all families to complete the survey that will be sent out. Your thoughts will help us understand what we are doing well and where we can improve. We invite you to participate in a short survey to share your thoughts and experiences. Your feedback will help guide our efforts to enhance the school experience for all students and families. The survey will not take long to complete and can be accessed here: https://eprovesurveys.advanc-ed.org/surveys/#/action/265758/18457.
Please submit your responses by November 6th end of business day. We greatly appreciate your partnership in making Huron the best it can be.

Attendance & Tardiness Matters
Ensuring that students arrive to class on time is essential for their academic success and personal growth. Each student is scheduled for either EL (Early Lunch) or LL (Late Lunch). I assure you that, under normal circumstances, all students are capable of being punctual. However, maintaining consistent punctuality requires a joint effort from both school and home.
Our teachers are expected to take attendance during the first 10 minutes of each class. When your child is marked tardy or absent, you will receive an alert via robocall. Please pay close attention to these messages, especially noting the time of day, as this indicates which class your child was marked absent or late.
Why Timeliness Matters:
Students are considered tardy if they are not seated with the necessary materials when the teacher begins instruction. If a tardy is excused (due to a delay with a previous teacher or staff member), a note or email must be provided.
Attendance Monitoring
You can view your child’s attendance through PowerSchool, allowing you to actively monitor any patterns of tardiness or absences. Your involvement provides the accountability needed for students to take their attendance seriously.
What You Can Do:
Communicate – If mistakes are made or attendance issues arise, contact us immediately. Prompt communication helps resolve any errors and reinforces accountability.
Stay Engaged – By paying close attention to robocall alerts and reviewing attendance in PowerSchool, you can help your child stay on track.
Support – If your child is consistently tardy, please reach out to their grade-level principal or counselor.
Absence Reporting Procedure
If your student will be absent from school for any reason, please report the absence. Families can report an absence using our attendance line or ABSENCE FORM.
Attendance Phone Number: 734-994-4327

I.D. Number
Grade Level
Date(s) and Time(s) of Absence
Reason for Absence
Your Name and Relationship to the Student

For your convenience, you can use our Absence Reporting Form to submit this information. Please follow this link to access the form.
WHAT PARENTS CAN DO WHEN THEY HAVE CONCERNS?
Concerns about a discipline or academic problem and its resolution should first be expressed or questioned at the point where the problem occurred. A discipline or academic problem involving a student in a particular class should be brought to the attention of the teacher of that class. If this step does not bring satisfaction, consult the student's counselor, advisor, or principal.
