Welcome to the St. Nick's Youth Ministry Weekly Update
ROGATION DAYS - APRIL 25 & MAY 6-8, 2024
Rogation Days are set aside to remind us how radically dependent we are on God through His creation, and how prayer can help protect us.
There are four Rogation Days:
- Major Rogation on April 25th every year.
- Minor Rogations or 'Rogationtide' always on the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday immediately before Ascension Thursday, or May 6-8 in 2024.
Rogation Days are now-little known days of penance.
It’s an unlikely time for extra days of penance, as it’s during Eastertide, and though often referred to as fasting days, during the Easter season, they would be observed as days of abstinence from meat, but not days of fasting.
"Rogation" comes from the Latin "rogare," which means "to ask." The primary purpose of the Rogation Days is to ask God to bless the fields and the parish (the geographic area) that they fall in, particularly with regard to farming, gardening, and other agricultural pursuits.
In the past, the Rogation Days were marked by the recitation of the Litany of the Saints, which would normally begin in or at a church. After Saint Mary was invoked, the congregation would proceed to walk the boundaries of the parish, while reciting the rest of the litany. The entire parish would be blessed, and the boundaries of the parish would be marked. The procession would end with a Rogation Mass, in which all in the parish were expected to take part.
Rogation Days were removed from the liturgical calendar when it was revised in 1969, but they are still good ways to keep us in touch with nature.
While many of our parishes may not celebrate the Rogation Days, there are ways we can still celebrate them.
- abstain from meat
- attend daily Mass
- recite the Litany of the Saints
- walk the boundaries of our parish, or a portion of them
- pray for farmers and the spring planting season

RECAP FOR APR. 21
The EDGE class was flexible as our original plan of Adoration was changed to time with the Blessed Sacrament. While there was no Expostion, the youth were still able to pray and meditate in the presence of Christ in the tabnernacle.
They were very happy to have Mr. Nick join us while Miss Elizabeth was out of town. It is always a special blessing to have him back in the Youth Room with us!
Next, we reviewed our last session, and began our 10th session of Symbolon, The Holy Spirit and the Life of Grace.
We discussed how they would describe the Holy Spirit, and how wind and fire are unseen yet powerful, like the Holy Spirit. We also covered the differences and need for Knowledge, Understanding, & Wisdom. Please click the links below to view the session and the discussion slides.
We then had a round of appluause for those who returned their completed worksheets and received a token for Bristol's Shaved Ice! See images & link above in the ANNOUNCEMENTS section for a printable PDF.
We ended with finding partners to play a game called EGGS-TRA HAND!
Congrats to our WINNERS! See video below.

HIGH SCHOOL/ YOUTH GROUP
RECAP FOR APR. 21
We had a major delayed start to HSYG but for good reason! The Knights of Columbus had a lot of yummy food left over after their induction ceremony and generously offered for the Teens to get plates. We also celebrated another birthday, so they all filled up on food and friend time! See video below.
We then completed our ninth session the God Is... Collection, God Is Relational.
We discussed the 'Kerygma' video, how to respond to the message God provides, receiving and sharing the good news in their lives, and God's invitation of a relationship with us. Please click the links below to view the session and the discussion slides.
Then things got silly as they gave each other an EGGS-TRA HAND! See video below.
