The Benton Blurb
News from Your Principal
Dear Benton Parents,
We are already a month into school! Routines and expectations are taught, relationships are being built, teachers are teaching curriculum and students are learning. Teachers have given our first round of assessments and students have done a nice job of showing us what they know. We've had a smooth start and we look forward to a year of learning and growing!
We look forward to seeing you at our first STEAM Night of the year on Thursday, September 26th from 5:00-6:30. We will have Kona Ice, board games a lot of fun activities! STEAM Night is paid for by Title I Funds. Feel free to read the Parent Engagement Policy attached to the email.
Wishing you well!
Mrs. Sarah Sicht

News from the Office
Visitor Management System:
Columbia Public Schools has a Visitor Management System in all our buildings. The goal of the Visitor Management System is to welcome our guests while also promoting the safety and security of scholars, teachers and staff.
During school hours, this system requires all visitors, contractors, and volunteers to scan or manually enter their state issued IDs to gain entrance. Visitors will then receive a visitor’s tag that identifies them as guest in our buildings. A visitor’s badge will not be necessary for those who visit our schools simply to drop off an item in the office or pick up paperwork.
DISMISSAL POLICY
Getting your child home safely, the right way, is very important to us. Every adult in our building has an assigned duty to help dismissal go smoothly. Remember that ALL changes to how your child goes home must be relayed to the office. Since last minute changes can create confusion on our part, please call the office as soon as you know you need your child to go home a different way than usual. (I always have to set an alarm to remember!)
We are unable to answer the phone from 2:20-3:00 as we are preparing for and executing dismissal, so please call before then so we can get every child home the right way. Thank you for your help!
STEM News
At Benton STEM, we want our students to develop a “STEM Mindset”. This mindset allows students to develop the skills and mental processes needed to problem solve in the world. The components of a STEAM Mindset are on the image to the left and come from the book A STEAM Mindset: Teaching the Next Generation to Problem Solve by Dr. Diana K. Lockwood-Bordana.
We are always looking for the best ways to share the exciting things happening in our building. Please take a moment to give us your thoughts on the best way to share with our families and community. https://shorturl.at/NBAhn
As always, feel free to reach out to Dr. Heather McCullar if you have any questions about our program or STEAM experiences.
Sincerely,
Dr. Heather McCullar, CPS STEAM Mentor
From Our School Nurse!
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are excited to begin a new school year with your family. The health of our students is our priority, and we know this year will bring many opportunities for your students to grow here at Benton.
We know you also want your students to succeed in the classroom and beyond. One way to set them up for success is to make sure they have health coverage. Whether you need to enroll for the first time or renew your coverage, Missouri Medicaid, also known as MO HealthNet, gives your child access to covered care like doctor visits, emergency care, mental health services, and more.
Lost coverage? Your child may still be eligible. A child in a family of three making up to $77,460 a year may qualify for MO HealthNet. Get peace of mind and make sure you get your kids the care they need! With low-cost or free health coverage options available, it’s worth a check at mydss.mo.gov.
For any questions about your coverage or help renewing, call 1-800-466-3213 or visit CoverMissouri.org. Help is available in person, online, and over the phone.
