Did You Know???

There are many opportunities for academic enhancement at Prairie View High School. Please don’t go through high school thinking the classes you take are the only opportunities to enhance your skills! From offerings to things such as academic assistance, ACT Preparation, College Visits, Job Shadows, and Certificate Programs you are bound to find an opportunity that helps enhance and personalize the education you receive at Prairie View High School.

Academic Assistance

Did you know about all the opportunities offered at PVHS for those who need assistance? For starters there is Extended Learning Day offered Monday-Thursday from 3:30-4:30 in the Business Computer Lab. Have a question? There is always a teacher right there to help guide you down the right path. While we require students to attend when they have 2 or more failing classes, any student may attend! Need more personalized attention/help? We offer peer tutoring that can meet when you are available before or after school. Other opportunities include HomeworkKansas (provided by the State Library of Kansas) and Khan Academy. Of course the best option always includes talking to your teacher during XLT, before or after school.

ACT Preparation

The ACT Test plays a huge part in both college admittance and scholarship money qualification. It is important for students who plan on pursuing a higher level degree to score well on the ACT. Prairie View offers several opportunities to improve ACT preparation. One opportunity is ACT prep through Method Test Prep of Career Cruising. Speak with Mrs. Richardson or your XLT teacher if you have questions. Mrs. Snyder and Mrs. Nickelson are probably the best resources available. They both work with students about one month prior to the fall test to review common concepts. Additionally they have old tests available to study and ask questions!

Prairie View has two other ways to help students prepare. There is ACT study resources available through Edgenunity. Additionally, this year on March 8th we will host Caroline Devane who operates ACT PowerPrep. It will have a small charge but the average improvement people have seen is 2-3 points per test through just a four hour study session.

Job Shadow

Job Shadowing is a job learning, career development, and leadership development tool. Essentially, Job Shadowing involves observing an occupation or area that might have a different job in hand, might have something to teach, or can help the person shadowing learn new aspects related to the job and certain behaviors or competencies. This helps the student to be more confident, aware, and also better prepared in the career field that they might be pursuing. Job Shadowing can give a student the sense of options that might be available as well as the skills needed to get there.

College/Vocation/Technical School Visits

Wanting to check out a career that interests you? We encourage students to visit colleges, technical schools, trade schools, etc to see what the programs are all about. It is important for students to determine that not only is the career a good fit for them, but also the training they receive is the best fit as well.

Work Release

Student employment can be useful both from an educational and financial standpoint. As long as the senior has the appropriate credits for graduation, students may apply to be released early from school to work their job. The opportunity is only made available if the students has a job, the number of credits warrants the early release, the employer signs and approves with hours of work listed, the parent/guardian approves this opportunity, and the Principal approves this privilege to take place. This could be a very beneficial move for some students.
