MRHS receives grant to support computer science career learning
MRHS will expand Project Lead The Way programs to provide hands-on applied learning and in-depth teacher professional development
Monomoy Regional High School has received grant funds from the One8 Foundation to offer new applied learning curricular programming from Project Lead The Way that will better prepare students for school and career success. PLTW is a nonprofit organization that provides a transformative learning experience for PreK-12 students and teachers through pathways in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science. With PLTW curriculum, students apply what they have learned to solve real-world problems.
“We are excited about bringing this curriculum to our already robust computer science program at Monomoy Regional High School,” said Monomoy Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Marc Smith. “PLTW not only gives our students an engaging curriculum experience that prepares them for the real world, it also connects them to industry experts and brings with it name recognition that helps make our students competitive in the college and career market.”
MRHS has been awarded $15,500 in grant funding that will be distributed over 3 years to help support the high school’s Computer Science PLTW programming.
Since 2017, the One8 Foundation, alongside the Massachusetts STEM Advisory Council, the Workforce Skill Cabinet, and the Massachusetts Life Science Center, have provided support to expand PLTW programming for students across the Commonwealth to better prepare them for a rapidly changing, data-rich world. PLTW coursework in the areas of biomedical science, engineering, and computer science provides students with many 5of the skills they will need to access opportunities in sectors that are powering the state economy.
“Participation in PLTW continues to bring innovative and authentic learning experiences to the classroom,” said MRHS Principal Jennifer Police. “Students can begin to see their futures taking shape as early as 8th and 9th grade. Finding new ways to inspire students has never been more important, and PLTW proves to be engaging to the next generation of creative and critical thinkers.”
Monomoy will use grant funds to strengthen its Computer Science offerings. Funds from the grant will support teacher professional development and the purchase of materials and equipment that will be used in PLTW courses. In addition, as a school with PLTW programming in Massachusetts, MRHS will have access to a regular set of teacher professional learning opportunities, student project showcases, and connections to industry professionals offered by Mass STEM Hub, a program of the One8 Foundation.
“We are proud to partner with Monomoy Regional High School to bring real-world learning to more students in Massachusetts,” said Dr. David Dimmett, PLTW President and CEO. “PLTW provides students with engaging learning opportunities that prepare the next generation for great careers and other life opportunities.”
In 2021, Project Lead The Way awarded Monomoy Regional High School a $44,000 grant for its engineering program.
