Note from the Principal
Dear Families,
As we approach the holiday season, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for your continued support and partnership. Your involvement makes a significant difference in our school community.
This time of year is an opportunity for reflection and appreciation. We are thankful for the hard work our students display every day and the encouragement you provide at home. Together, we are building a nurturing environment for our children to thrive.
Wishing you and your family a joyful holiday season filled with warmth and happiness.
Warm regards,
Sarah Ellinger
Act 20 Literacy Tips - Snap Words
High frequency words are words most commonly used in the English language. Sight words are any words recognized instantly. Any word can become a sight word. Many high frequency words are decodable (can, had, and, at, like). Words that are irregular can be introduced and studied to point out the irregular parts (have, does, you, said, want). This procedure helps students map the written letter to the sounds in the word. First, say the word. Then, count the individual sounds. Next, discuss any irregular parts. Finally, spell and write the word. It can also be helpful to create sentences with the word. Looking at high frequency words this way can be helpful for students and allows them to make connections.
Fun With Mrs. Kramer in Physical Education
OH WHAT FUN it has been to be in PE class at Northview this month!
For grades JK-1st we have played many winter and holiday games which included riding on and pushing/pulling classmates on scooters, rolling giant exercise balls across the gym, practicing our underhand throw and catch with buckets and shuffled hula hoops across the floor with our feet.. We fed the reindeer, rode on Santa’s sleigh, pushed giant snowballs across the gym floor and practiced our ice skating with hoops. There is no doubt we are always moving!!
In grades 2nd-4th we just completed our floor hockey unit. This is brand new for our 2nd graders as we focus on basic puck handling and shooting skills, whereas 3rd and 4th work on accurate passes, looking for teammates and goalie skills. We can’t wait to see what 2025 brings for Northview PE!
Youth Art Month
As we approach the new year we enter the time of Youth Art Month which brings various local and statewide art shows. I wanted to let everyone know that all student artwork is being held until after these shows. The months leading up to the event are filled with creativity and hard work from our students, and preserving their masterpieces is key to making the art show experience successful.
Why Keep the Artwork?
Keeping the artwork in good condition ensures that every student’s effort is showcased in the best possible way. It also allows us to display their work at its full potential and give them the recognition they deserve during this exciting time of the year.
While we are keeping all student artwork safe, please note that not every piece may be chosen for a show due to space, entry limits, entry guidelines, and display considerations. However, we are committed to preserving each student’s work, and we will ensure that all artwork is safely stored until after the show season.
If your student needs a specific work of art sooner they are welcome to take it home sooner. You can email Nicole Lewis anytime to send a piece of work home: nlewis@hgtigers.com
View Artwork Anytime on Artsonia!
While we’re keeping the physical artwork, we remind you of Arstonia. This online platform allows you to explore a digital portfolio of each student’s artwork throughout the year as well as previous years.
- You can log in to Artsonia anytime to view, share, and even order keepsakes featuring your child’s artwork.
- All artwork uploaded to Artsonia is photographed in a way to preserve its beauty and detail.
- Artsonia is a great way to keep a lasting record of your child's creative journey.
If you are not aware of Artsonia or still need to sign up use this link https://www.artsonia.com/connect/PZ6KR8YM to take you to the sign-up page and follow the directions.
We look forward to celebrating the incredible talent of our students both in-person at the art shows and online through Artsonia. Thank you for your understanding and support as we work to highlight and celebrate their creativity!

Winter Weather Reminders- Recess Clothing
As the winter season approaches, I wanted to take a moment to share some important information regarding our school's policies and expectations for outdoor recess during inclement weather.
First and foremost, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the cold temperatures. When the weather feels below zero, we will have indoor recess to keep our students safe and comfortable. There is a list of clothing requirements below. Additionally, please provide a separate bag to send any wet clothes home in.
It's also crucial that you label all pieces of your child's winter clothing. Our lost and found tends to grow quite a bit during the winter months, and labeled items make it much easier to return them to their rightful owners.
Finally, here is a quick reference for the ideal clothing for outdoor recess based on temperature:
- 60+ degrees: No outdoor clothing needed
- 50-59 degrees: Spring-type jacket or sweatshirt, long pants
- 40-49 degrees: Jacket, long pants, close-toed shoes
- 1-39 degrees: Winter coat, gloves, hat, snow pants, boots
- Below zero: Indoor Recess
If a child arrives at school without the necessary items, such as a coat, hat, gloves, snow pants, or boots, we will do our best to provide them with what they need. However, our supply of extra winter gear is limited, and we may not always have the right size or item available.
In the event that your child is missing critical winter clothing, we will first try to find them something suitable from our lost and found or extra supplies. If we are unable to do so, we may need to call you to bring the necessary items to school. This is to ensure your child's safety and comfort during outdoor recess.
I understand that acquiring all the required winter gear can be a financial burden for some families. If you are in need of assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to the school. We have resources available to help provide winter clothing for students who need it.
Thank you for your attention to these important winter weather details. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Counseling Corner
THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
We’d like to thank everyone who contributed toward our Virtual Giving Tree and/or participated in the $1 donation dress-up day. We were able to help 8 families (including 21 school-aged children) with holiday gifts, clothing, and winter gear. Between all three schools, we raised over $500! Every cent went toward purchasing items on family wish-lists. We feel very fortunate to be part of a community that is so willing to help others in need! Thank you again for your kindness and generosity. We look forward to helping families again next year!
Character Development
During the month of December, Northview students learned about the character traits of Empathy and Kindness. We spent a great deal of time discussing empathy. We learned that empathy means to understand and care about how someone else is feeling. Once we had a solid understanding of empathy, then we talked about how we can put empathy into action by showing acts of kindness. It was great to see all of the examples of "Empathy in Action" that we saw around our school building!
For the month of January, we are learning about the character trait of Growth Mindset. We will learn that our brain is like a muscle and that taking on challenges gives our brain the exercise it needs to grow and get stronger. We will learn to embrace mistakes and to use the "Power of Yet" to persevere through challenging times. In doing so, we will learn to flip our negative self-talk into positive self-talk!
