WMS Weekly Warrior
November 12, 2024
Good Afternoon Woodbury Middle School,
We hope you enjoyed the long weekend and certainly thanked a Veteran along the way. Thank you to the students who participated in honoring a veteran and filling our display in the main hallway. Students also wrote heartfelt thank you notes to our veterans, expressing gratitude for their service to our country.
With the end of the fall sports season, we quickly transition to our winter sports schedule. WMS offers boys' and girls' basketball, along with cheerleading. Remember that all students need to register with Family ID before attending tryouts (https://www.familyid.com/woodbury-middle-school-athletics). If you have any questions, please get in touch with Jamie Odell at WMSAD@ctreg14.org.
Try outs will begin on November 18th:
Girls Basketball: November 19, 22, 26
Boys Basketball: November 18, 21, 25
Cheerleading: November 22, 25, 26
The picture retake is on Thursday from 9:00 to 10:00. The main office will call any student who missed or needs a retake by grade. Please get in touch with the office with any questions.
Our Parents in the Middle will have their first meeting on Nov. 14th at 6:30 in the WMS LMC. To attend this meeting virtually, please follow this link.
Woodbury Middle School has significantly improved its attendance by reducing chronic absenteeism by more than ten percentage points, according to the state of Connecticut. We owe this achievement to all the families who support our efforts in getting students to school. Attending school regularly is the first step toward student success. Additionally, our efforts to reduce tardiness are also showing positive results. Together, we are making a difference in both attendance and punctuality.
Have a great week,
WMS Admin
Bill Nemec, Principal
Aimee Shuhart, Interim Assistant Principal
Please make sure to review the Woodbury Middle School Student Handbook with your student regarding cell phones. Some of you may be aware that the state has issued recommendations on cell phone usage in schools. I have included the proposed language from the state below. Click the picture to access the entire document from the state.
• Middle School − The policy for middle school students should also focus on removing cell phones from the school day or classroom. Developmentally, this age group is particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of excessive personal technology use and has a difficult time controlling their impulses. Concurrently, middle school students experience increased autonomy and independence during the school day, which can lead to increased opportunity for cell phone misuse. − Possession of cell phones in this age group is likely to be viewed as a rite of passage into adulthood, so communication and application of policies that restrict use must be developed in consideration of the specific challenges of middle school students.
