FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Dear Edison Families,
We’ve just wrapped up an amazing first full week of school! This week we have been focusing on building community, establishing routines, and laying out clear expectations.
Building a strong community is important to us, and we’ve been doing this in exciting ways. In classrooms, morning meetings and activities like "Find Someone Who" have been fantastic for bringing students together. Our staff had a great time sharing their bilingual stories over a PTA-sponsored breakfast. Parents mingled at our New Student Tostada Party, Primary Back To School Night, and Parent Cafecito. We can’t wait to keep the momentum going with upcoming events like Upper Grade Back To School Night, Coffee with the Principal, and our Fall Book Fair.
Establishing routines is essential for everyone. They provide a sense of security, help us know what to expect, and allow us to dive into new learning with ease. Our teachers are working hard to set up classroom routines, and we follow the mantra, "We have to go slow to go fast." By taking time to build these routines now, we’re setting the stage for smoother and more effective teaching and learning later. At home, I encourage you to create routines for meals, sleep, and homework so your children are ready and regulated for their day at school.
Clear expectations help everyone succeed. Last Wednesday, students participated in our rules assembly where we discussed our three Edison rules:
- Be Safe
- Be Kind and Respectful
- Focus on Learning
It was heartwarming to see how quickly students grasped the importance of these rules for creating a safe and friendly environment. Edi Eagle made a special appearance, adding an extra dose of fun to the assembly. In the classroom, teachers are working with students to craft agreements that fit their unique settings. At home, establishing clear expectations for behavior and responsibilities can help your children understand what’s expected of them. Reinforcing our school rules at home ensures consistent messaging and supports their success.
Here’s to another fantastic week ahead at Edison!
Warm regards,
Directora Ipiña

SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Back to School Night
On September 3rd we will host our Back to School Night for grades 3-5. This week our 2nd grade families will provide delicious food for purchase, and you will have opportunities to socialize and attend a volunteer training, before heading to the classrooms to meet your child's teacher, explore the classroom and hear about the year ahead. Here’s the schedule for the evening (note that the classroom visit time has changed slightly):
5:00-5:45 Volunteer Training (Cafeteria)
5:00-6:45 Food Sales (Outside Cafeteria)
6:00-6:45 Principal Presentation (Cafeteria)
6:45-7:45 Classroom Visits
This event is designed for parents only (there is not childcare). Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to kick off the school year! We can’t wait to see you there!
Wednesday Parent Meetings
Each Wednesday, from 8:30-10:00 am, we have parent meetings in the Library. All parents are invited. Meetings are bilingual and there is a Zoom option at this link (although in person attendance is recommended). The meeting types are as follows:
1st Wednesday: Coffee with the Principal and Experts
2nd Wednesday: English Learner Advisory Council
3rd Wednesday: PTA General Meeting
4th Wednesday: Parent Cafecito
Last week we had our first Parent Cafecito, a simple coffee event for parents to socialize. Since we became a closed campus our parents have missed socializing opportunities, so we have created this space just for that.
This upcoming week we will be hosting Coffee with the Principal and Experts. At this meeting you will have an opportunity to ask questions and share thoughts with the principal while enjoying a cup of coffee or tea. In addition, the principal will invite in experts from our staff to provide talks about topics of interest. For our first meeting, the "expert" will be the principal, but in future meetings, expert staff will share information on topics like: English Reading, Spanish Reading, Math, and Social Emotional Learning. We hope to see you there!
STAR Testing
The STAR Testing Window is still open this week and will continue until next week. Some classes did not test yet because teachers wanted students to become more adjusted to school. Here are the tests student will take by grade level:
- K: Early Literacy in Spanish
- 1st: Early Literacy in Spanish or (if students scored over 852 last year) Reading and Math in Spanish
- 2nd: Reading and Math in Spanish, Reading in English
- 3rd-5th: Reading and Math in English, Reading in Spanish
Parents can view results in Aeries under Test Scores. Remember these are national percentile rankings. The 50%tile is average. Scores above 50 that are above average, scores below 50 are below average. These scores and more about your child's achievement will be discussed during Parent Teacher Conferences at the beginning of November.
Arrival and Dismissal Tips
Although it can be challenging to access our school, if we all work together, it can go a lot smoother. We still have folks double parking and driving in the wrong direction. Please follow these tips to create a better experience for all:
- If you can walk or bike, please do!
- It is healthy for you, good for the environment, and minimizes congestion
- If you drive:
- Consider parking at Virginia Park and walking over
- Follow the traffic flow map below
- If you use the drop off zone:
- Make sure your child is ready to exit on the right side of the car.
- Do not get out, we will open the door
- Do not:
- Park in the drop off zone
- Double park
- Make a U turn
- Ask your child to walk across the street without a crosswalk
- Do:
- Leave early
- Be kind and respectful to all

Lost and Found
LABEL YOUR CHILD'S THINGS
Has your child already lost the new jacket, hat, lunchbox, or water bottle you bought for the new school year? You are not alone. Our Lost and Found is already getting filled with items. It is located under the stairs near the snack benches. If your child loses something, encourage them to pass by to look for it. If you label your child's things with their name and room number, we can return it to them. Take a moment to label and save money and frustration.
Data Confirmation
DATA CONFIRMATION - LAST CALL!
If you have not done so yet, please complete the data confirmation process so we know your contact information is correct and you have updated your child's emergency contacts. Please provide information for both parents (if there are two) and at least two emergency contacts in case we cannot reach the first one. You can access your Aeries parent portal account by clicking on the following link: https://santamonicamalibu.aeries.net/Student/LoginParent.aspx.
Ensure you log in using your parent account (parent email address) and not your child’s account. If you have never accessed the Aeries Parent Portal or forgot your password, click “forgot password,” enter the parent email address on file, and follow the instructions to reset your password.
Fill Out the Free and Reduced Lunch Application
VERY IMPORTANT!
Even though food is free at school, we need all families who think they may qualify to fill out the free and reduced lunch application in order to determine if our school will receive Federal funding under Title I. Last school year we did not get enough applicants and we missed out on $200,000 to spend at Edison. In addition to helping the school, families who qualify will get access to scholarships and special opportunities. APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY OCTOBER 4.
