D. W. Daniel High School
December 2023 Newsletter
Message from the Principal
D.W. Daniel High School,
We have a lot to be thankful for at D.W. Daniel High School. We have amazing young people who represent great families, first-class faculty members who work together to find new answers to how to engage our students, and an amazingly supportive community. The results speak for themselves as our kids have excelled in the classroom and in extracurricular activities. Whether it is National Merit Scholarships, the SAT, Marching Band, Girls Golf, or being the AAA State Champions in Football, our kids are great.
It is my hope that during this season our kids and our school serve our community. Simon Sinek says, “service isn’t doing what’s expected of us. Service is doing more than what’s expected of us.” It is my hope that while we prepare for exams and begin to turn the page to a second semester we all take a moment or longer to invest in our community. I challenge our kids to move beyond themselves and make their world a better place. Go Lions!
Serve EACH Student; Take Care of People!

Helping Students Look Their Best for the Winter Semiformal
Thanks to the generosity of Clemson sororities, fraternities, and community members, the Foundation collected approximately 200 dresses and over 100 pieces of men’s semiformal attire, including dress shirts, ties, pants, suits, belts, and even some shoes.
For two days during lunch, all students were invited to drop in to the Lion’s Den to find an outfit that fit their fancy. It was very gratifying for our volunteers to witness the joy and excitement of the event. We appreciate the support of Daniel administration, teachers, and staff for allowing this event to occur during the school day.
Stocking the DandeLion Closet for the Cold Months
Thank you to all who attended and contributed to the Share the Warmth coat drive on November 9. More than 30 women attended the soup luncheon. We were overwhelmed with more than 50 new and gently used coats and generous monetary donations. The DandeLion Closet will be well stocked for the winter months.

Science National Honor Society
Dr. Penni Black, Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Director of the Professional Program at the University of Kentucky, spoke to our SNHS members on November 1 about her research and career. She discussed how she studies genes and cell- and tumor-signaling pathways to personalize lung cancer therapy. One part of her laboratory matches patients to pharmaceuticals that will target their specific type of lung cancer, and another part examines the tumors to develop therapies that utilize patients’ immune systems to target the cancer. Outside of her current research, she also outlined her academic history, her other scientific research interests, and the path she has taken in STEM. We appreciate Dr. Black sharing her expertise—and UK swag—with us.
SNHS Members should plan on attending our upcoming meeting on December 6 at 5:30 PM in the LMC. Dr. Heather Dunn from Clemson University’s Bioengineering Department will join us to discuss her research on breast cancer.
