Language Arts
📱 Cinder explores a future in which technology plays a powerful role. It is based on the story of Cinderella, which has been told and retold countless times across the world in books and movies. Students’ familiarity with Cinderella will enable them to focus on the elements of science fiction and how a change in setting affects the plot.
📋 In this lesson students will:
Cite textual evidence to support inferences.
Analyze the structure of a text.
Read and comprehend literature.
Acquire and use accurately general academic vocabulary.
Provide a summary of the text.

Determine the connotative meanings of words.
Recognize inappropriate shifts in pronoun number and person.
📖 Homework:
15-20 minutes of reading from a book of their choice.
Work that students are unable to complete during class.
Work that students miss when they are out of school for sickness, travel, etc.
Retake Assignments
💯 The second marking period ends this Friday, January 17. All corrections, retakes, and incomplete work must be turned in by Friday. Please encourage your child to talk to me about their grades if they are unsure of what needs to be done. Please feel free to reach out to me directly if you are trying to help them. Thank you for your continued support from home!
Math
🔣 This week we will calculate sales tax and do more complex "percent of" problems. Some students could still use practice with their basic multiplication facts. Quiz them in the car or at the dinner table with basic facts like 6x8 or 12x5. A little extra practice goes a long way!
Science
🌦️ Last week in science class, we answered the focus question, "What is Weather". We had fun watching weather forecasts and even got to present our own. Last week we started to chart our weather day by day to determine whether the climate is really changing.
🌫️ This week in science class, we will continue charting our weather. We will also answer the focus questions, "What is Air?" and "What is the Atmosphere?" What is in the air? What are the layers in our atmosphere? We will be exploring these questions and more through note-taking, videos, reading, and even a lab or two.
💯 On Thursday, we will have our first quiz from this unit. It will be an open-note quiz. Please remember that all quizzes are open notes quizzes and will not be available to retake them.
Social Studies
🏙️ This week, we continue to explore the relationship between people and the environment. In the coming weeks, we will examine population trends, migration patterns, and the challenges of overpopulation and suburban sprawl. Students will also discuss sustainable solutions, such as using renewable resources and pollution-reducing technologies, to address these global challenges.
🌎 Our topics for this week are all about population:
- How do we measure population growth?
- What causes population growth?
- What are the effects of population growth?
💯 On Friday, students took an open-note quiz on the topics covered in the first half of our People and the Environment Unit. Scores for this quiz will be posted by Monday morning. Students will have one more, short, graded assignment for the marking period on Tuesday of this week. All past due assignments should be completed and turned in by Friday.
