CATCHING UP WITH... Mrs. Edmonston
Principal's Notes
Dear Coyote Families,
We had another GREAT WEEK at Canyon View Elementary School! Our students experienced X-Plorations lessons with a focus on instrumental music and PE, Mrs. Alexander's class enjoyed a Cookies and Karaoke Party with Ms. Walsh for being our February Attendance winners, and families gathered in the MPR for a special movie night hosted by the CVES Dad's club.
This week, we have a lot of wonderful things planned! On Thursday, our Global Languages program is presenting a special Indian music assembly for all students, featuring world-renowned percussionist Mannargudi Easwaran! On Friday, we have early dismissal at 12:45 and the CVES Foundation is holding it's second biggest fundraiser of the year: Jog-A-Thon! Pledge information is included in the packets that went home last week. Students are invited to get in the Jog-A-Thon spirit with theme dress-up days all week. Remember to wear your Class Color on Friday. Volunteers are needed for this event - check out the sign-up link below!
Please take a moment to complete your continuing student registration. We are only 57% of the way to our goal of 100% completion by the end of March.
Let's Make it a Great Year Together,
Mrs. Erica Edmonston (she/her/hers)
Principal, Canyon View Elementary School
Continuing Student Registration - We are only at 57% Complete
March 1 through 31. A digital packet must be completed for all returning students. This will allow for proper placement of your student for the 2024-2025 school year. This annual digital process will allow a family to complete one single “family” packet instead of completing one packet per student. Packets can be completed using any computer, tablet or smartphone with an internet connection.
- Login and complete the digital registration packet online at the ParentVue portal
- Once parents/guardians have completed the online registration, please download and complete any required forms and follow site direction for processing and collection.
PUSD Transfer Window - OPEN NOW!
The Poway Unified transfer window is now open! Transfer requests for students who live within the Poway Unified boundaries and would like to attend a different Poway school other than their school of residence should be submitted online by visiting the PUSD webpage and clicking the “Transfers” link on the home page. This includes incoming siblings of current students. Please enroll your student at their school of residence when new student enrollment opens online on April 1, 2024. Transfer requests cannot be processed until the student is enrolled in their school of residence. The transfer window closes on March 31st at 5:00 pm. For more information, please visit PUSD’s Residency & Transfers webpage.
PUSD Board Policy Update: Mobile Communication Devices
We realize some parents may choose to have their child carry a cell phone or wear a smartwatch to school for before/after school communication. To ensure these devices are not disruptive to teaching and learning, mobile communication devices shall be turned off during instructional time. Smartwatches may be worn and shall be turned off or placed in “school mode” during the instructional day. In addition, cell phones, smartwatches, and other mobile communication devices shall not be used in any manner which infringes on the privacy rights of any other person. When a student uses a mobile communication device or smartwatch in an unauthorized manner, the student may be disciplined, and a district employee may confiscate the device. The employee shall store the device securely until it is returned to the student or turned over to the principal or designee, as appropriate.
The district will not be responsible for a student’s mobile communication device or smartwatch which is brought on campus or to a school activity and is lost, stolen, or damaged. If your child needs to communicate with you during the school day, they will be given access to a school phone at an appropriate time.

This annual event, which promotes health and fitness, is the Foundation's second largest fundraiser that raises money to support school programs, such as Science, Art, Music, Physical Education, Computer Science and IMPACT, Technology, the CV Innovation Station Lab, and many other school and classroom needs not met by the current district budget. A fundraising packet will be going home with your children. Team CV Volunteer Opportunities
Hello Canyon View Volunteers,
We are looking for volunteers for upcoming events. These are some smaller jobs for parents/ guardians who are looking to start with a smaller task. Seasoned CV volunteers are also welcome, of course!
#1 The Jog-A-Thon. A Foundation event which raises money for Music, Art, Computer Science, PE with Coach Chase, IMPACT, Science Lab, technology at school, and much more. The Jog-A-Thon has a chair (leader) and is looking for committee members to help plan and run this huge event. Jog-A-Thon date is March 22. It runs most of the school day, with different grades at different times, TBD.
#2 The Silent Auction. Also a Foundation event to raise money for the same programs listed above (see Jog-A-Thon). Date is May 17. The Silent Auction is an online auction with the big finale at the Coyote Roundup. (See below for more info about the Roundup.) The Silent Auction also has a chair and is looking for committee members to help. Tasks include finding vendors to make donations, communicating with CV room parents, putting together baskets, and other organizational tasks.
#3 The School Dance (formerly Winter Dance). This is a very popular PTO Event. Date is March 29. There are 2 seasoned event chairs and they need help on the day of the event (am and pm) for decorating, running the event (snack table, merchandise table), and clean up.
#4 Garden. The PTO Garden is looking for some more help. They really need someone who can volunteer 2 hours, once a month, to cut back weeds.
#5 The Coyote Roundup. Our big annual event at CV. Date is May 17. It is our carnival style event, with games, food, cake walk, prizes, and our Silent Auction in the MPR. There are multiple committees for the Roundup and we need more volunteers.
Thank you so much for helping make our school such a fun community! If interested or to learn more, please reply to me (just me) or you can email the Foundation or PTO Presidents (see above).
Thank you,
Sabrina Monahan
PTO and Foundation VP of Volunteers
TEAM CV Meeting
Coyote parents (members or not) are invited to attend our monthly Team CV meetings, especially if you are interested in learning what the PTO & Foundation do, how money that is raised is spent, or are interested in training or shadowing for a position on the board/s next year. Many of our current board members are graduating out with their 5th graders this year and having people who are comfortable taking over key roles is important to ensuring we maintain a strong partnership for our younger kids. Though formal childcare is not available, children are invited to attend meetings and sit in the room with parents. Meetings occur every first Thursday of the month at 6 pm in the Innovation Station or via Zoom. For Zoom info, please DM us to be added to the distribution list.
Our next meeting is Thursday, April 4th. Hope to see you there!

Attendance Matters at CVES!
Did you know that school funding is based on school attendance, not student enrollment? That means schools lose money for every day that a student is absent, regardless of the reason. Ensuring that your child comes to school every day is one of the most important ways you can guarantee funding for the programs that make a difference for your child. This is more crucial than ever with statewide cuts to school funding starting next year.
If your child can't avoid missing school and will be out for three days or more, call the CVES office to request an OCIS contract.
To report an absence or request an OCIS email or call our attendance hotline:
