Principal's Update
Apologies for the longer Gator News than normal. Apparently there was an issue with my account and my last few Newsletters have not been distributed. I sincerely apologize the loss of information and communication!
We are in the final week before Winter break! It's hard to believe we are already more than half way through the school year. Hopefully you can see the great growth and learning your Gator has obtained this year in their report cards. It's super exciting to see the collective growth our students are making so far this year.
MSMS Data Highlights? (It's great and rare to see this kind of gain midyear in a middle school! )
- The number of students that were proficient or above on our RenStar Literacy Testing went from 74% of our Gators up to 78.8% of our Gators. And we also saw a significant reduction in the number of students that were flagged for Urgent Intervention (down 7.1% to 5.6%, as a school)
- The number of students that were proficient or above on our RenStar Math Testing went from 62% of our Gators up to 68% of our Gators. And we also saw a significant reduction in the number of students that were flagged for Urgent Intervention (down 8.3% to 6.5%, as a school).
- Chronic Absenteeism (missing more than 10% of the school days) last year at this time approximately 27% of our students were chronically absent. This year, we are down to 19%...that's an 8% drop.
- Discipline Data:
- We had a drop in our HHB from last year 22 at this time to 4 so far this year (82% drop)
- In and Out of School Suspensions dropped from 20 last year to 7 so far this year (65% drop).
Our incredidbly dedicated teachers, staff and students are working hard each and every day to help our Gators grow in incredible ways. We hope that you also take great pride in this data as we know it is our work is done in partnership with families and caregivers.
Best, Julie

Notes from Nurse Caitlin
Cough drops
I hope you all have been enjoying the recent sunshine as much as I have. Despite the brighter weather, we're still seeing cold symptoms, including sore throat and cough. If your student needs cough drops at school, cough drops need to be dropped off in the health office by an adult and an over the counter medication form needs to be signed by the caregiver. Cough drops can then be dispensed to the student throughout the day by the nurse. The nurse does not have a school supply of cough drops, and students may not carry cough drops in school. Here is a link to the over the counter medicine form that can be filled out ahead of time: OTC medication form.
We encourage students to bring a water bottle and drink water throughout the day to soothe a minor cough or sore throat. If your student needs a water bottle, they can request one from MSMS Sustain here.
Crutches
A reminder that students may only use crutches in school when a written healthcare provider's order for crutches has been given to the school nurse. Crutches are not supplied by the school nurse. Please contact the school nurse directly if your student will need to use crutches in school so that appropriate accommodations can be made.
