UMS Educator Profile - Kirsten Utley
Kirsten Utley has been at Union Middle School for the past 12 years. She currently serves as one of our 7th grade Social Studies teachers. She also teaches our 8th Grade Leadership class. Enjoy the following Q&A below as we get to meet Kirsten Utley!
How long have you been at UMS? What do you love about being an educator at UMS? This is my 12th year at Union Middle School. What I love about being an educator at UMS is the community. I always feel supported and that our school culture has a positive atmosphere.
What are you most proud of in your career so far? I am most proud of my ability to have great rapport with our students. I also enjoy all of our middle school extra curricular activities. I have loved teaching electives in the past, like debate and Intro to leadership. I'm also proud to be involved with WEB and coaching UMS sports teams.
What’s one thing on your bucket list? I feel there are so many places I would still like to travel. I would love to see lots of Asia and Africa.
What's one thing your students don't know about you that they would be surprised to find out? I don't have any social media nor do we have a game console in our home.
What are your words of wisdom? "Don't take yourself too seriously."
What is your favorite lesson/curriculum to teach each year? Why? I love team building challenges with students. It's so fun to see them play at school and work together to solve problems. Curriculum wise, I love our Social Studies Simulations that put our students in the shoes of someone historical.
What made you want to become a teacher? I wanted to become a teacher because I loved my college job at Los Gatos Recreation, working in their afterschool care program as well as with summer camps.
If you had to describe your classroom in just a few words/sentences, what would you say? Fun, lively, loud, fast paced.
What's one instructional practice that you've adopted for your classroom that you now cannot live without? The Name Game we play on the first day of school. I know all of my students' names by the 3rd day of school. This activity sets the tone four our shared classroom environment every year.
HOME & SCHOOL CLUB UPDATES
Help UMS Feed Local Families this Thanksgiving.
UMS is partnering again with the Cupertino De Anza Lions Club in its community-based Thanksgiving Food Drive to provide 180 boxes filled with Thanksgiving food items and pantry staples for local families experiencing hunger or need this holiday season. Here is how you can help:
Donate non-perishable items. Please drop off donations of the following items to bins outside the office from November 12-22: 1) 1 lb bags of rice, 2) canned vegetables, 3) canned soup, 4) boxed mac and cheese, 5) peanut butter, 6) cranberry sauce, 7) pasta, 8) stuffing or 9) 1lb bags of dried beans.
Sponsor a Family. Our popular Sponsor a Family program is back this year, where for a $50 tax-deductible donation you can provide enough funds for us to create, assemble and deliver a large box of turkey, all the fixings and lots of staples that will feed a family of 4 for Thanksgiving dinner and to fill their pantry for the coming weeks.
Volunteer. We need volunteers for the weekend of the Food Drive, November 23-25. We will be outside Lunardi’s asking shoppers for donations and assembling and delivering boxes from our Cupertino headquarters. Supervised children are welcome. Please sign up here.
Thank you for your support in providing much-needed food items to local families this Thanksgiving. Questions? clairekalia at gmail dot com
