I hope the weekend was refreshing and rejuvenating. We are officially in the fall season, which is one of my favorites. It's hard to beat crisp, sunny, fall mornings, along with the array of color changes with the trees. And of course, I don't mind that fall means football season.

Message from Dr. Dan Carpenter (New)
Greetings, fellow Cougars!
My name is Dr. Carpenter. I am the new Assistant Principal. I am excited to be at Kellogg. The last couple of years I was at Harrison Park and prior to that at McDaniel High School.
Myself, Mr. Nguyen and Ms. Mac are the team of administrators representing the amazing staff here at Kellogg. I am responsible for the sixth grade students and half of the seventh grade (alpha M-Z). I am also the administrative representative for the science department, physical education, health, and electives. Ms. Mac and I are the go-to administrators for everything conduct and discipline, which is to say that if Ms. Maurer needs support, she comes to us first.
One of my big focuses here is school culture and climate. School culture is different from school climate. Culture is a product of what we do, climate is how we feel about what we do. I care deeply about the student and family experience and truly desire to help all students and families feel like Kellogg is the best. I want to build a positive set of experiences (culture) to empower the people we serve to feel like Kellogg is the best middle level educational organization (climate).
Truly though, I can’t build culture alone and I cannot impact climate alone. We must come together to accomplish the fun things that make middle school special for our students. We welcome partnerships and I am looking forward to meeting and involving everyone that wishes to be part of it. Please reach out if you're interested in getting involved. I am easy to find.
On a personal note, my wife Brenda and I are both professional educators. Between us we have over 50 years of experience. Brenda and I both have PhDs in STEM Education, hers from Texas Tech University and mine from the University of Nebraska (Go Huskers!). We have three children, Cooper (14), Alissa (16) and Noah (22). We love the outdoors. Brenda is big into music and plays in two community bands. I am an ex athlete and ex head coach, fitness is still a big deal to me.
Please know that I have an open door in our building. If you need anything, please don’t hesitate to connect with me.
Kindest Regards,
Dr. Dan Carpenter
Assistant Principal

Message from Ms. Hannah Maurer (New)
Hello, Kellogg Families!
I’m excited to introduce myself—my name is Hannah Maurer, and I have the pleasure of serving as Kellogg’s School Climate Specialist. Many of you may know me from my time as a 6th grade Spanish Immersion teacher here at Kellogg. I stepped into this new role in October 2022, following Gillian Murr, who is now the Director of PPS' Indian Education Department.
In my role, I focus on supporting our school-wide systems and addressing behavior support needs in classrooms. I’m here to coach and assist our dedicated teachers as they enhance their classroom practices. Additionally, I collaborate with students, teachers, and administrators to navigate discipline and incident reports effectively.
Creating a safe and supportive learning environment is my top priority, as I want every student to feel valued and excited to be at Kellogg. Having grown up in central Illinois, I understand the importance of community, and I’m committed to fostering stronger connections between our families and the Kellogg Middle School community. I’m here as a resource for you, and I look forward to working together to support our students.
Warm regards,
Hannah Maurer

Sun Extended-Day Programming (Update)
Welcome!
Hi everyone!
My name is Cristina and I'm really excited to get to know the Kellogg community this year! I'm a first generation immigrant from Peru and I have a master's degree in social work from PSU. I've lived in Portland since I was eight, and went to the Odyssey Program at Hayhurst when I was in middle school. I love playing video games, making music on my laptop, and painting in my spare time. If you ever want to talk shop about Pinterest boards, vaporwave aesthetics, chickens, or wacky instruments around the world I'm always happy to listen!
**Cristina can be found in Room 111C and can be reached at floresc@latnet.org or 503-839-0672

Student Schedules (Reminder)
During these next two weeks, we will be closely monitoring student attendance and student enrollment. Please note that we may need to adjust some students’ schedules to ensure class sizes are balanced. If your student is impacted, our counselors will make sure to communicate any schedule changes in a timely manner.
Keep in mind, some classes are Quarter-long classes, some classes are for a Semester, and others are for the full school year. Before you or your student reaches out with questions, we want to share some clarifying items here.
We are not adjusting schedules for the following requests below. Calling and emailing about the following items will not initiate a change:
- I don’t like my teacher and want a different teacher.
- I want to be with my friend in X class instead of Y class.
- I want X class at a certain time of the day.
- I don’t want to try that elective. (Middle school is a time of growth and exploration. Trying new things is age-appropriate in school, especially with regard to electives).
- I have too much PE in my schedule (the minutes for PE have increased for the state, so the goal is to have 3 quarters total of PE in each schedule each year).
- I should not have Study Skills. Students with IEPs have a Study Skills class in their schedule in Middle School as part of their IEP minutes for services. Once school begins, if you believe that the IEP needs to be discontinued or adjusted, you can speak with your student’s case manager.
- I should not have a Math support or an English support class. Students are placed in these classes due to test scores indicating that they need added instructional support in their school day.
The following types of schedule errors will be worked on for corrections by our team:
- I am in the wrong level of Math (acceleration was through data on tests and confirmed last year. If there was no confirmation of an accelerated Math pathway, then the current Math course is correct).
- I have two periods of PE in a single day.
- I don’t have a Spanish Immersion class in my schedule (if DLI student).
- I have an IEP and am missing the Study Skills class in my schedule for added support.
Action Item
- If one of the schedule errors mentioned above impacts your student, please complete this form.
- No need to e-mail or call the school for course changes. You will be directed to complete the form.
School Traffic Circulation Map (Reminder)
Thank you for taking the time to review our traffic circulation map provided by the Safe Routes to School teams at PBOT and PPS. PBOT and PPS staff visited our campus to conduct a traffic circulation observation and suggested the following modifications to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety
around our campus during the peak hours of arrival and dismissal.
Key Changes
- The School Street pilot project on SE Franklin Street behind the school has ended. SE Franklin Street will be no longer have School Street signs while PBOT and PPS revise the School Street program.
- As a dead-end street, drivers are discouraged from dropping off and picking up students on this section of SE Franklin St. Walking or biking is encouraged.
Vehicular Traffic
- Suggested vehicular traffic flow is depicted using purple arrows on your map.
- Drivers are encouraged to drive clockwise, so that the school is always on your right. Drop off students on the school-side of the street to limit crossings.
- Do not park in the school bus loading zone north of the school.
- When dropping-off or picking-up, avoid stopping in the travel lane or attempting to make U-turns. Student drop-off should occur in the marked parking section on SE 69 th Avenue. Do not drop off in the “No Stopping or Parking” area.
- Please consider parking 1-2 blocks from the school and walking the remainder of the way. This Park and Walk provides an opportunity to get active during the day and allows you to avoid the school traffic lines.
Thank you,
-Safe Routes to Schools Team

Schoolwide Expectations (Reminder)
At Kellogg we are proud of our schoolwide expectations as they provide our students with safe, structured, and productive learning environments. Please take the time to review some of our expectations below.
Cell Phones and Technology Devices
Cell phones and all personal technologies (e.g. gaming devices, wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers, etc.) are expected to be off and away during the school day. Students are expected to keep cell phones and technology devices off and away in the hallways, restrooms, and at lunch recess as well. If a student is spotted with a cell phone or technology device, it will be immediately confiscated and taken to the front office. Students with repeated cell phone or technology infractions will be placed on individualized cell phone and technology plans.
Backpacks
In alignment with many other middle schools in the District, all backpacks must be stored in lockers during the school day. Backpacks clutter classroom spaces and items are frequently lost or stolen unless they are stored safely in a locker. Students will use their binders to carry their learning materials throughout the school day.
Learning Logs
To help students stay organized and keep track of important dates and deadlines, students will be issued a Learning Log. Be sure to check your student's Learning Log regularly to stay up-to-date with your student's assignments, tests, and other announcements. Learnings Logs will also serve as the student's hall pass when students leave the classroom during non-transition times. It is critical that students do not lose their Learning Log.
Toys and Valuable Items
Students should leave all toys, valuable items, and any item that can cause safety concerns or distractions at home. Leaving these items at home will ensure items are not lost or stolen.
Closed Campus
Kellogg is a closed campus. All visitors must check-in at the front office. Students must be signed out and picked up by a parent or guardian in order to leave campus before dismissal time. Additionally, our school will not accept DoorDash, Uber Eats, or other deliveries to students. Parents and guardians are welcome to drop off lunch items for their students at any time.

Key Contacts (Reminder)
Below are the counselors and Administrators supporting each grade level.
Student safety, student well-being, and student learning are our top priorities. If you ever need to speak to a teacher, counselor, administrator, or any staff member, please call the front office or e-mail the individual directly to schedule a meeting. Unannounced meetings are often difficult to accommodate as school staff have busy and tight schedules. In particular, before school, after school, and lunch times are the busiest times in schools as most staff members are on duty to ensure student safety. Thank you for your support and understanding!
