Background

Following up on the Superintendent's community message sent on February 11, LPS has announced the start of Phase II elementary and middle school redistricting. Phase I redistricting began in 2015, with an outcome of some modification of the elementary school assignment map that applied to new, incoming students. It was planned that Phase II would involve a more comprehensive effort that would occur at or near completion of the new Lexington Children’s Place and Hastings Elementary School.

It is now time for us to begin the challenging and important work of adjusting our school assignment maps. Phase II Redistricting is expected to be more widespread, impacting more neighborhoods and areas of town than our 2015 redistricting effort. Our goal is to effectively use existing and newly available school capacity to ensure learning environments that are as equitable as possible for all students across the district. New maps will be implemented for the 2020-21 school year.

More On Standards Based Report Cards

I realize that I wrote a blurb about report cards a bit early. As we come back from vacation, I thought I would add a few words, as well as a reminder.

Your child's report card became available for your review on Friday, February 15 via the parent portal: https://ma-lexington.myfollett.com/aspen/logon.do If you have any issues with your log-in, please email parentportal@lexingtonma.org.

We describe children's progress against an end of the year standard - meaning how are they doing compared to where we want them to be by the end of June. We use 4 options M, P, B, N. Some parents may think these are comparable to a traditional A, B, C, and D, but they are not.

• P stands for "Progressing". It means your child is on track for where they should be mid year in relation to the end of the year goal. If your child gets all P's, that means they are on track to meet end of year benchmarks and are making expected progress across the board.
• M means they meet the END OF YEAR standard. This is less common to see on a January report card.
  
• B stands for "beginning to progress towards the standard." This is an area needing continued to focus, but with signs of making forward progress to close a gap.
  
• N is far less common and is an area where we need to make a concerted effort to address needs over the next half year.

Believe it or not, we have already starting thinking about next year's incoming kindergarten students. We are excited to welcome new families and returning families to Estabrook.

If you have a child in your household that will be 5 years old on or before August 31st, they are eligible to attend kindergarten. And please spread the word to your neighbors with young children!

In order for your child to come to Kindergarten, and our Kindergarten Screening in May, you must have them registered through Central Registration at our LPS Central Office located at 146 Maple Street, in Lexington.

Early registration really helps us with our planning for the upcoming year and knowing how many sections of kindergarten to expect.

On March 14th in the evening, there will be a parent informational session held at Harrington School, which is located next door to the LPS Central Office. Information about the informational session can be found here:

KIndergarten Screening

KIndergarten Screening at Estabrook will be May 21, 22 & 23 for incoming kindergarten students. In order to come to screening, you must have registered your child. More information about scheduling an appointment for the screening will come out later.

Please join Lexington SEPAC/SEPTA for the second annual Special Needs Resource Fair.

Come meet therapists, recreational organizations, nonprofits, support groups, and other providers who serve families and children with special needs.

Childcare will be available in the kids' activity room thanks to our High School volunteers.
