Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI)
Since we have used four of our District's six built-in snow days this school year, we wanted to share the next steps in case we surpass the maximum number of allotted snow days in the coming months.
DESE allows school districts to count up to 36 hours of instruction through Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI), such as virtual learning or assignments to be completed at home, during emergencies, or extended closures.
Our District has not used AMI for weather-related closures in the past, but if we exceed our six built-in snow days this year, the WSD will utilize AMI to keep students engaged in learning and prevent extending the school year into the summer break. On AMI days, families and staff will be notified through the regular district communication channels (phone call, text, social media). Student attendance will be recorded on days when AMI is assigned and will be documented by the completion of assignments and turning in activities. Assignments will be turned in either through Canvas or by returning them to their teacher on the next in-person learning day. Educators will be available electronically by email during AMI days for guidance with instruction.
Lakeview will be providing detailed instructions to families this week, so you can start making plans in case we pass up our sixth snow day this winter. Please work with your building administration and teachers to address any questions.

Yearbooks
Parents - the deadline to order a 2023-24 Yearbook is Friday, February 23. This is the LAST DAY to guarantee your child will get a yearbook. Quantities after this date are not guaranteed. Go to www.yearbookordercenter.com to place your order today! Lakeview's order code is 16942.
BOE Policy Update
In December, we updated the Code of Conduct around Discriminatory Conduct and Speech to overtly address discriminatory, insensitive, demeaning verbal, written, pictorial, or symbolic language or gestures based on a protected class (race, color, national origin, ancestry, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, age, & genetic information). The District shared this change in the Board Meeting Report following the revision, and we have since reviewed expectations with students. View the comprehensive document. A copy of the updated Code of Conduct is available on the WSD website.
Community Engagement Opportunity
Superintendent Dr. Danielle Tormala, District administrators, school leadership and staff, members of the Board, and student representatives will come together to collaborate with our community! RSVP for our upcoming Community Roundtable and Holt Feeder Pattern Student/School Showcase on Feb 12 at the Heritage Campus.
Student Information System Change
In case you missed it in the January Inside the WSD, we're Transitioning from SIS K-12 to Focus School Software. Next year, tasks such as completing forms, viewing grades, and checking lunch balances will be done on the Focus School Software platform rather than on Tyler SIS K-12. Here's a quick update on what you need to know. Be on the lookout for additional information coming soon!
Parent Culture and Climate Survey
If you haven't already, please complete this Parent Culture & Climate Survey to provide feedback about our school and district. The survey will close Feb. 9.
No School- February 19 & 20
WSD will not be in session on Monday, February 19 in honor of Presidents Day. WSD staff will also have a Professional Development Day on Tuesday, February 20. These are also noted in the "Important Calendar Dates" below.
iReady Family Report
We are so excited about one of iReady’s newest features! New this Fall, the For Families Report is now available on the Student Dashboard! We have activated this feature for all families. Not only do you have access to the report, you have access to a multitude of information and resources related to the iReady diagnostic and personalized learning available to your student.
We have created an in depth guide to the Families Report to help you navigate what it means for your student and what you can expect from us as partners in your student’s education.
Counselor Corner
Hi LVE families,
This month we will be learning about empathy- what it means and how we can show empathy to others! Below are a few ways that you can help your child continue to learn about the theme of empathy through reading about it, talking about it, and practicing it!
Read About It!
Here are some books to help your child learn more about empathy:
Hey, Little Ant by Hannah and Phillip Hoose
What’s Wrong With Timmy? by Maria Shriver
Everyone by Christopher Silas Neal
The Journey by Francesca Sanna
Practice It!
Help your child practice considering the needs of others. When you are watching TV or reading books, ask your child what he/she thinks the characters are feeling, and what they might need in that situation. What could you say or do to help that person?
Talk About It!
Here are some discussion points to help you talk about empathy with your child:
What does it mean to be empathetic and why is it important?
Tell me about a time when you were empathetic towards someone else.
Tell me about a time when someone else was empathetic towards you.
How can you tell how someone else may be feeling?
Your School Support Team,
Stephanie Davenport (K-2 School Counselor)
Alissa Erbs (3-5 School Counselor)
Ally Tallin (School Support Interventionist)
Inclement Weather Preparation
The weather is getting colder, and we want to help you be prepared! Timely communication with our families is always a priority, but especially important in inclement weather/emergency school closing situations. Please notify your school office about any change in your personal contact information, so we have your current information on file. Visit the WSD website for information on District practices during inclement weather/school closings.
St. Charles County Library Partnership
St. Charles County public school district students have automatic access to library materials and online resources through the St. Charles County Library. This year, our families were provided the opportunity to opt out of this automatic access when completing annual forms at the beginning of the year. If desired, parents may opt out by working with their school librarian mid-year.
Wear It Wednesday
Wear it Wednesday!
Every Wednesday at Lakeview is a House Spirit Day, which we call WEAR IT WEDNESDAY! If your child wears a shirt reflecting their house color, they get one house point. We recognize not all families or students have official house shirts, and we want to recognize students who rock their house colors. As a reminder the colors are:
Altruismo - Black
Amistad - Red
Isibindi - Green
Reveur - Blue
If your child comes to school in a house shirt OR wearing a shirt of their color, they earn a point for their house.
