The Americans on this Wall Never Grew Old
Pennsbury High School (PHS) hosted the 23rd annual Wall of Honor Ceremony on Friday, May 24, 2024. The proud Pennsbury tradition of honoring fallen American heroes with ties to the district is traditionally held the Friday before Memorial Day weekend.
The Pennsbury Wall of Honor lists 162 soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Fourteen of the names on the wall attended PHS. The remaining 148 soldiers are related to a student, current or former staff member. Two new names were added to the wall this year - Private Paul Wasyliszyn and Captain Robert W. Tibbetts, both of the United States Army. Private Wasyliszyn was the great uncle of current PHS students William (11th grade) and Shane Treiber (9th grade). He was killed in action in France while serving in World War II. Captain Tibbetts was the great-grandfather of current PHS freshman Jacob MacKinnon. He was killed in action when his plane was shot down in Assam, India, during World War II.
The ceremony began with the Posting of the Colors by the PHS Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Cadets Owen Wood, Drac Gill, Dominic Ausevich, and Salem Stephenson. PHS sophomore Maddie Magee performed the Star-Spangled Banner and God Bless America. Lou Sudholz, PHS assistant principal, athletic director, and supervisor of physical education, welcomed guests, including local veterans, Gold Star families, Pennsbury students and staff, and community members.
“Today, we gather with solemn hearts and unified spirits to honor the great men and women who have laid down their lives in service to our nation. Memorial Day is more than a day of remembrance; it’s a testament to the courage, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of our fallen heroes. We are reminded of the profound debt we owe to those who fought to secure the freedoms we cherish. Their sacrifices remind us of the true cost of liberty and the enduring strength of the human spirit,” said Mr. Sudholz.
Senior Isabella Bush recited the opening Veterans prayer. PHS sophomore and JROTC Cadet Joseph Burcaw recited the poem "In Flanders Field" by John McRae, which pays tribute to the fallen heroes of World War I who lost their lives in Belgium and France. Freshman cadet Savannah Stevenson recited “A Daughter’s Thoughts,” a poem written by the daughter of a Vietnam veteran to her father. Senior Madison Klein, whose great-uncle was killed in Vietnam and is remembered on the Wall of Honor, read an excerpt from the Gettysburg Address. Noah Howington and Aidan Keesler, senior members of the PHS Marching Band, performed Echo Taps.
This year's guest speakers were 1968 Pennsbury High School graduates William J. Strickler and Sergeant Dennis Smith (retired) of the United States Air Force. Sergeant Smith, who served in Vietnam from 1971 to 1975, credited his experiences at Pennsbury with helping him prepare for basic training.
“It was a six-week course. It was tough. They marched you; they put you through all of these drills. One of the things that prepared me, and I thank Pennsbury, is that the Pennsbury High School Marching Band taught me how to march. I can honestly say that Pennsbury played a big role in getting me through basic training,” said Sergeant Smith.
Sergeant Smith added that the discipline he learned by being on the Pennsbury High School wrestling team also helped him through basic training.
“Mr. Kopack was the trainer, and his practices in that sweat room were a lot tougher than what we went through at basic training,” Sergeant Smith said with a laugh.
William Strickler is the executive producer of the award-winning short film She is 17 Again. The story is set against the backdrop of the Vietnam Wall and was inspired by his memories of Pennsbury High School.
‘Growing up in the 60s, I remember the days of Vietnam. I remember sitting in the auditorium and all my buddies listening to the draft number for each one of us. Mine was 182. I had a friend who was 366. I went to college, and that was my draft deferment, so I never fought in Vietnam. Others didn’t go to college, so they were drafted if they had a low draft number, or they enlisted because they may have felt that it was their duty to be a patriot and protect our freedom and the American Way,” said Stricker.
“Today and every day, I hope we remember as we walk past the Wall of Honor that behind each name is a real person that lived and was a part of the fabric of our school and our community. They walked the same hallways and sat in the same classrooms as you do today,” Strickler told the students in attendance.
Following Strickler’s remarks, the audience sat silently as they viewed a video featuring photos of the military members whose plaques are hung on the Wall of Honor. The video stood as a sobering reminder of their sacrifice.
Before the ceremony concluded, Aly McBryar, the lead advisor for the Pennsbury Wall of Honor, reflected on the importance of Memorial Day and Pennsbury’s Wall of Honor.
“Each year, the ceremony changes. New people are inducted, new families attend, and new friends are made. But some things never change. Our loved ones are still gone. We still mourn the loss of the lives they never lived and the dreams of what life would have been like with them beside us. Our families and our lives are incomplete and will never be the same. But what will be the same is that each year, we will be here to remember and honor their sacrifice so we can remain free. We will live our lives every day as if it is our last. Every day is a gift.”
Now in her 10th year as the lead advisor for the Wall of Honor, McBryar works closely with the Pennsbury Wall of Honor Foundation, a non-profit organization, to maintain the wall and foster an appreciation and respect for our nation's military. The wall is funded by public donations made to the foundation. A refresh of Pennsbury’s Wall of Honor is expected this summer. The public is always welcome to visit the wall. To make tour arrangements, please contact Aly McBryar at amcbryar@pennsburysd.org.
Passport to Heritage: Inside PHS Inaugural Culture Fair
Pennsbury High School held its inaugural Culture Fair on May 23 as a vibrant celebration of diversity and unity. Organized by the PHS Building Equity Leadership Team, all students were invited to participate by creating display booths that showcased their family heritage and culture. Each student received a passport that they had stamped as they made their way through the event, learning about the unique cultural aspects of each country. Additionally, some presenters offered food representative of the various countries, adding a delicious touch to the cultural experience. The fair successfully fostered a sense of community and appreciation for the rich diversity within PHS.
Tribute to Late PHS Graduate & Basketball Captain Unveiled at PHS East
A heartfelt ceremony took place at Pennsbury High School East on Monday, May 20, 2024, to unveil a memorial plaque honoring Joey Monaghan, a 2017 Pennsbury High School graduate and former captain of the PHS Boys Basketball team. Joey passed away in 2022 after a brief battle with a rare sarcoma.
Joey's mother Susan Duffy and his father, Joe Monaghan, unveiled the plaque along with PHS senior basketball players Connor Taddei and Teddy Mangan, the first two recipients of the Joey Monaghan 3-D Award, which celebrates Desire, Drive, and Determination—qualities Joey exemplified. Joey's siblings, Aidan Duffy and Brynn Duffy were also in attendance, along with Connor and Teddy's parents.
Upon graduating from Pennsbury High School Connor will continue his basketball career this fall at St. John Fisher University in Rochester, New York, where he will major in Athletic Performance. Teddy will pursue a degree in business while playing basketball at Penn State University Altoona.
PHS Boys Basketball coach Wes Emme led the dedication ceremony, emphasizing the impact Joey had on the team and the lasting legacy he leaves behind. The plaque serves as a tribute to Joey’s remarkable life and his enduring influence on the Pennsbury High School community.

Exploring Watershed Conservation at Afton Elementary
Fifth-grade students at Afton Elementary School recently participated in an engaging and educational program conducted by the Pennsylvania Resources Council, focusing on watershed protection. Using an Enviroscape model, the students observed how water flows through our environment and how it can pick up pollutants along the way. This hands-on demonstration helped them understand the impact of pollution on water systems.
The students also explored water quality testing through the study of macroinvertebrates. They got up close and personal with preserved specimens, learning to identify various types of macroinvertebrates. This activity illustrated how these small creatures can indicate the health of a water body, as different species thrive in different water quality conditions.
Additionally, the presentation emphasized various strategies for protecting watersheds. The students learned about everyday actions they can take to minimize pollution and contribute to healthier water systems, such as properly disposing of pet waste and toxic household chemicals, conserving water wisely, capturing and reusing rainfall, and more.
Pennsbury Music Staff & Alumni Perform at Elementary Schools
This week, Pennsbury's talented music staff and dedicated alumni visited all ten elementary schools in the district to perform instrumental demonstrations for third-grade students. These sessions aimed to help the students decide which instrument they would like to pursue next school year. The group performed together and gave individual mini-performances, showcasing their instruments, how they are played, and the unique sounds they produce.
The students had a wonderful time, enthusiastically snapping and clapping along to the beat and singing along to familiar tunes.
A special thank you to the following Pennsbury staff members and alumni for organizing and performing these engaging sessions:

MOST Students Participate in Employability Expo
Students enrolled in Pennsbury High School's MOST program recently participated in the annual Bucks County Intermediate Unit's Employability Expo. The IU partners with various businesses and agencies to provide students from across the county with the opportunity to partitipate in mock job interviews. Young adult learners participate in three interviews and attend breakout sessions about employability. At the conclusion of the interview, they receive feedback on their performance based on an established rubric and review their resumes. The young adult learners at the Employability Expo were supported by Mrs. Stephanie Rappin and MOST Job Coaches Kim Gail and Elizabeth Young.
Pennsbury's MOST Program is designed to support students with disabilities as they transition from secondary education to post-secondary life. It provides individualized instruction, vocational training, and community-based experiences to help students develop essential life skills and prepare for independent living and employment.
Court is in Session - Pennwood Holds Mock Trial
At Pennwood Middle School, 7th-grade students recently embarked on a journey through American history, delving into the intricacies of judicial proceedings through an engaging mock trial activity. Students assumed the roles of advocates, witnesses, and jury members, breathing life into pivotal moments from the nation's past.
Led by the vision of Mr. Rhoads and Mrs. Becknell, the auditorium stage transformed into a courtroom. From the impassioned pleas of attorneys to the compelling testimonies of witnesses, each student brought a unique flair to their role. Through roleplay, they not only embraced the essence of historical figures, but also gained a deeper understanding of the complexities of legal proceedings.
Congratulations to the students who earned accolades as the best advocates and witnesses in the trial: Marcella Allen, Keshav Kanubaddi, and Nadia Radzinski.
Bon Appétit!
Pennsbury High School AP French students and their teachers, Madame Carroll and Madame Russo, visited Chez Alice French Bakery in Lambertville, New Jersey, on Tuesday, May 22. Students enjoyed French pastries, bread, and tea while learning about the origins of the tasty treats.
To enroll in AP French or any AP World Language class at Pennsbury High School, students must have successfully completed Level 4 Honors of the chosen language. AP World Language students work to obtain a strong command of grammar and vocabulary along with competence in listening, reading, speaking, and writing in the target language. The target language is used at all times in AP World Language classes.
Pennsbury Drama Enjoys "Noises Off" Performance and Cast Q&A
Pennsbury Drama Troupe #830 attended a special matinee performance of Noises Off at the Bucks County Playhouse on Thursday, May 23. Noises Off is a hilarious farce about a theatre director and a troupe of mediocre actors as they blunder from a bad dress rehearsal to a spectacularly disastrous performance.
After the performance, the troupe was treated to a cast talk-back session where they got to ask questions about rehearsals and technique from an all-star studded cast including, Marilu Henner, Richard Kline, John Bolton, Jen Cody, Roe Hartrampf, John Patrick Hayden, Amanda Kristin Nichols, Barrett Riggins and Folami Williams. If you want to laugh hysterically - go see it!
Living History Demonstration at Penn Valley
On Wednesday, May 22, 3rd-grade students at Penn Valley Elementary School took a "field trip" to their school's backyard. Robin Moore - author, storyteller, and teacher - demonstrated a Tipi Raising with the help of the students. He also told stories, showed artifacts, and discussed the vast history of the tipi and its many uses. Students also created arrowhead necklaces in their classrooms.
The event is a hands-on living history project where students work as a team to erect a 16-foot Cheyenne Tipi. Robin compared and contrasted how the Lenape Native Americans who lived in Pennsylvania, and the Cheyenne Native Americans who lived in the high plains of the western United States, used the plants and animals in their environment to craft a life based on a respect for everything that is alive.
Robin Moore has been telling stories and conducting educational demonstrations for over 25 years. Nyla Houser, a member of the Pennsbury Arts Foundation (PAF), was also in attendance for this special day. This demonstration was made possible thanks to the generosity of the PAF.
