Celebrating Women's History Month
Spotlight on Malala Yousafzai
"Education is the best weapon we have to fight poverty, ignorance and terrorism"
In 2013, Malala won the United Nations Human Rights Prize, which is given out every five years. She was also named one of Time magazine’s most-influential people that year. Malala wrote a memoir with the help of another writer. The book, I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban, was published in 2013.
Yousafzai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014. She was the youngest person to ever receive the Nobel Peace Prize. She shared the award with another children’s rights activist.
Malala Yousafzai Fun Facts
Secret Word: education
She won the Nobel Peace Prize
She was the youngest person (17) to ever receive the Nobel Peace Prize, which she won in 2014. Malala Yousafzai was in chemistry class when she learned she had won the Nobel Peace Prize. After hearing the news, she recalled, "I went to my physics class. I said, I have to finish my school day, because when you get the Nobel Peace Prize for education, you have to finish your school day."
Malala the Blogger
This book shows Yousafzai growing up in Swat, Pakistan, and wishing for a magic pencil to solve her problems. She learns that she is able to make change, such as advancing rights to female education, without a magic pencil. Malala was just 11 years old when she began blogging about how the Taliban’s ban on girls’ education affected her and her friends. The blog quickly became famous.
Malala speaks (or understands) 4 different languages
Malala grew up learning Pashto. She learned Urdu, which is the national language of Pakistan. From a young age she also started learning English. Lastly, Malala can comfortably understand a bit of Arabic from studying the Quran. (She also used Duolingo to advance her Arabic skills!)
