Breathe Easy — Avoid Vaping Illness
Keep in mind:
- Vaping devices — also known as JUULs, e-cigarettes, e-cigs, vapes, e-hookahs, vape pens, mods, tanks, or electronic nicotine delivery systems — can contain nicotine, marijuana, or other substances like flavors.
- Nicotine and marijuana can be harmful in any form to youth, and these products should be avoided by youth, young adults, and pregnant or nursing women.
- If you use vaping devices, monitor yourself for symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath, chest pain) and promptly seek medical attention if you have concerns about your health. If you are concerned about your health after using an e-cigarette product, you can also call the Washington Poison Center at 1–800–222–1222.
- If you do use e-cigarette products, you should not buy these products off the street (for example, e-cigarette products with THC or other cannabinoids).
- You should not modify e-cigarette products or add any substances to these products that are not intended by the manufacturer.
- Adults who use tobacco products who are attempting to quit can use evidence-based treatments, including counseling and FDA-approved medications. If you need help quitting tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, contact your doctor or other medical provider.
Governor Jay Inslee Discusses an Executive Order on Vaping
"We're interested in ensuring adults and young people have known and regulated ingredients in these products and have accurate information available to them. Everyone deserves to know what is in these e-liquids when they are inhaled into our lungs but right now this is an unregulated industry. This is a giant hole in the ability to protect the public health of our citizens."
"My executive order will ask the State Board of Health to adopt emergency rules to ban all flavored vapor products, including flavored THC products. I expect a board to take up this request and vote on it at their next meeting on October 9th. My executive order also directs the Liquor and Cannabis Board to do the following:
- Immediately ban any ingredients or sources that are found to be the cause of this acute lung illness.
- Increase regulatory oversight of these products and limit bulk sales.
- Expand their educations campaign.
- Warn consumers of the risk.
- Encourage providers to report all suspected cases."

Your Voice Impacts What We Do
Local Community Prevention & Wellness Initiative Coalitions (CPWI) want to know how adults in their communities view and understand youth substance use. Responses to these annual surveys help them develop strategies that are responsive to community needs and prioritize their efforts to support community wellness.
Surveys are anonymous and voluntary. Questions can be skipped and you may stop the survey at any time. Surveys take on average 5-10 minutes to complete.
