Mrs. Hawkins’ teaching career began in 2000. She has taught a total of 20 years; 16 of those in elementary school and four in middle school. Mrs. Hawkins has been teaching at WKMS three years; first as a 6th grade math teacher and now as the Math Interventionist. Mrs. Hawkins earned her Bachelor's degree in Education from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa and her Master’s degree in Trauma Informed Education from Columbia College in Columbia, South Carolina. She will represent WKMS so well this year. Be sure to congratulate Ms. Hawkins when you see her.

During this time, we will be educating ourselves on how to stand up and speak out regarding bullying behaviors. Let's help end this behavior once and for all.

How would you end bullying? What can you do to help and educate our world? We welcome your ideas and awesome artwork depicting anti-bullying to share with students throughout the month. All submissions can be sent to tshull@lexington1.net.

• Check Schoology DAILY. to make sure all work is being completed (especially if quarantined).
• Clean out your backpack - Backpacks are getting pretty messy. Take the time to clean it out and put those papers in the appropriate sections of your binder.
• Check PowerSchool often to make sure you do not have any missing assignments or low grades that you need to pull up. The end of the nine weeks is Oct. 20.
• Organization - A 3-ring binder with dividers for each class is a great and EASY tool to use to help. Check out the picture below to assist with creating a well-organized binder.
• Replenish pencils and paper. Many students are beginning to run out of these important supplies. A quick check to make sure each student has enough pencils and paper for class is a great help to all!

Chyanne recommends Halfway Normal by Barbra Dee. According to her, "it catches your attention so much and it is so fun to read. I would recommend this book to people who like realistic fiction." Book Description:

Norah Levy has just completed two years of treatment for leukemia and is ready to go back to the “real world” of middle school. She knows it’ll be tricky—but like the Greek mythological characters she read about while she was sick, Norah’s up for any challenge.

But seventh grade turns out to be harder than she thought. Norah’s classmates don’t know what to make of her. Her best friend, Harper, tries to be there for her, but she doesn’t get it, really—and is hanging out with a new group of girls. Norah’s other good friend, Silas, is avoiding her. What’s that about, anyway?

When Norah is placed with the eighth graders for math and science, she meets Griffin, a cute boy who encourages her love of Greek mythology and art. And Norah decides not to tell him her secret—that she was “that girl” who had cancer. But when something happens to make secret-keeping impossible, Norah must figure out a way to share her story.

But how do you explain something to others that you can’t explain to yourself? Can Nora take her cue from her favorite Greek myth? And then, once she finds the words, can she move forward with a whole new “normal?”

Our next door deco contest will be Nov. 11. We will be doing a Career Door Deco contest to go along with Career Month.

Football is off to a great start. Check out the schedule below and make plans to attend one or more of the remaining games. They are playing so well this season and the games are always a fun time. Our football players work hard and would appreciate your support. Go Hawks!

The White Knoll High School Boys Tennis Team will begin open season practices on Tuesday, October 12 from 4:15-6:15, continuing Monday-Thursday through the rest of October. Open season will be open for all returning and non-returning prospective athletes in grades 7-12 interested in playing this upcoming season. You must have an updated physical dated on or after April 1, 2022 to participate. All information is located on the Planet HS website and must be completed per instructions on the website.

Little Miss Timber Cub 2023

Title: Little Miss 6th grade WK, Little Miss 7th grade WK and Little Miss Timber Cub 2023

Date: January 28, 2023 11:00am in the new performing art center at WKHS

Fees: $50 participation fee and a $12 tshirt fee

Contestants should come to the pageant ready with hair and make up for the pageant.

One of the strategies that helps students be most successful is making goals and planning how to accomplish them. At WKMS, we believe in the power of goal-setting. The summer is over, and the school year has begun. We believe this will be a great academic year for our students and teachers. As a Parent, Teacher, Student Association (PTSA), we planned some exciting programs and activities for our school last year. We were able to accomplish a few of them, but due to COVID concerns, others were abandoned. I want to invite you to join the PTSA this year.
