Mangakahia Cultural Festival
Last Thursday, one of our largest Kapa Haka groups over recent times, spent a wonderful day at
Mangakahia Cultural Festival. It was a very relaxed and whanau friendly event, with all of the school
mixing throughout the grounds, enjoying each other’s company and the food available. Each group
performed in the hall.
The Maungatapere Kapa Haka Roopu were very polished, passionate and noticeably strong in
numbers and volume. They looked spectacular in their kapa haka uniforms. This group should feel
really proud on the mahi and time preparing this year. To quote Miss Ruth: You do the mahi, you
get the treats. We were definitely treated as an audience. Well done, Brooke Hepi, Kimberly Ruth
and Matua Shane.
Junior Athletics
It was wonderful to see the children enjoying athletics rotations and giving events a go. Again, the
attitudes of the students were a standout to me. Our Y4 students, were great role models, patient
and supportive of the younger ones and participated in a junior designed event. In the past the Y4’s
students have competed with the senior school. This change was brought about by the Whangarei
Primary Schools Sports Association moving to Y5&6 and Y7&8 competitions.
I believe the highlight was the sprint races.
Y5/6 Surf Trip Today
At the beginning of the year the Y5/6 classes who travelled to Lonsdale Park for their camp, started
the surf activities with an external company. Unfortunately, the weather was not appropriate and
the decision was made to postpone. We have extensive safety planning procedures around EOTC,
and this shows the importance on making the right call on the day. Well done, Miss Ruth and team
and the external provider.
Today the group is gathering while I finish this newsletter, to head out to Sandy Bay for a day
developing surfing skills and gaining confidence in the water. Unfortunately for me, I have the
senior management team released and cannot attend. These surf days are a real highlight for
children, teachers and parents. Enjoy your day team.
Alexis Magee Rm 7 Commitment above and beyond to 'Make it happen'. You have outstanding artistic talents!
Jake George Rm 8 For his huge effort towards completing all Maths Buddy tasks! A wonderful example of developing work ethic.
George Dickson Rm 1 Amazing attitude towards his learning. By putting in the mahi he has gained the rewards in progress.
Chevarni Mitchell-Hanson Rm 6 For making her learning happen by being engaged in class discussions and sharing her ideas.
