VOGELTOWN SCHOOL TE KURA O HUATOKI
WEEK 9, TERM 2, 2025.
FROM RYVES...
This week we travelled to Central School for another round of games. We had a very successful exchange and achieved the following results:
Rugby won 93-0
Netball A won 11-5
Netball B lost 16-6
Football lost 3-1
Every year that we compete with Central School, the Carrington Shield is up for grabs, going to the school with the most wins. This year we competed for this within Rugby, Football, and the Netball A games. Well done to our teams for holding onto this for another year!
As we wrap up another season of inter-school sport, I’d like to celebrate the efforts of the children in these sports teams. Over the past term, these tamariki have represented Vogeltown School with plenty of pride and a spirit that reflects our IROCK values.
Whether playing at home or away at other kura, they have shown fantastic sportsmanship, and a never-give-up attitude. Their behaviour and energy have made us feel really proud.
What has been especially pleasing this season is their growth - between last year and this year, and also from week to week. They have become more confident and shown a strong sense of teamwork.
A massive thank you goes out to the parents and whānau who have come along to support our teams from the sidelines. Your encouragement means plenty to the children and adds real value to the occasion for them. Many thanks to Matt Goodwin for the organisation that he has put into this as well and taking the lead when both hosting and visiting.
Ka mau te wehi, team Vogeltown! You’ve done us proud.
THANK YOU TO OUR TEACHERS
As we come to the end of the term, I’d like to acknowledge the staff here at Vogeltown School. They are a group of outstanding people, and since joining them, I’ve seen first-hand the incredible effort they put in for all our children. They’ve answered plenty of my questions, adapted to new ways of working, and always remained open to new possibilities. Their dedication, professionalism, and willingness to grow are a big part of why we are able to do so well, and I’m proud to be part of this team.
CELEBRATING OUR VOGELTOWNER AWARD RECIPIENTS
Congratulations to all the children who have been recognised by their class teacher for a Vogeltowner Award. This special tradition began many years ago, and today marks an incredible milestone a little over 700 Vogeltowners have been honoured over that time! That’s a pretty incredible legacy of awesomeness!
These awards are given to students who consistently present the best version of themselves. They bring to life our school vision of manaaki whenua, manaaki tangata, haere whakamua — caring for the land, caring for people, and going forward with purpose. They also embody our IROCK values of Inclusive, Respectful, Original, Courageous, and Kind.
To all the recipients - well done! You truly deserve this recognition and we’re really grateful for the positive example you set for others every day.

A GLIMPSE INTO GALLIPOLI
Over the past month, Room 9 has been making trench dioramas. We had to add small details such as barbed wire, creating a realistic model of a realistic ANZAC trench! It took longer for some, but before the end of term we managed to get them finished!
ANZAC History
When the ANZACS left their ships, they were at first surrounded by ear piercing gunshots. Then they had to sprint all the way up a hill then were forced to dig foxholes, which they formed into one long trench. Trenches were curved into wonky zig-zagged lines, so that if one part was bombed, people on another part of the trench weren’t affected too badly.

FAREWELL CELESTE!
Very soon, the Vogeltown School crew will officially be on baby watch as we say goodbye to Celeste Broderick who is heading off on maternity leave!
She’ll be swapping planning meetings for birth plans, morning tea duties for midnight feeds, and the classroom for a nursery. We have no doubt that all her teacher powers - patience, multitasking, and the ability to detect trouble from a mile away - will serve her well in this next adventure!
While we’ll miss her fun energy, we’re so excited for lies ahead and we’ll be eagerly awaiting any news!
WELCOME TO SHAUNICE!
We are delighted to announce that Mrs. Shaunice van Dyk will be taking over as the teacher in Room 8 starting from Term 3. We are grateful that Shaunice has been able to come into school for a few days this week getting to know the children, and learning more about classroom routines and the way the school operates.
“Kia ora koutou, my name is Shaunice van Dyk, and I’m thrilled to be joining the Vogeltown School whānau in Term 3. I bring with me seven years of teaching experience in the primary sector in South Africa, as well as a recent year working in early childhood education here in New Zealand. I’m also a mum of two, so I understand the importance of strong home-school partnerships and creating a classroom environment where every child feels safe, valued, and excited to learn. I’m passionate about building meaningful relationships with tamariki and their whānau, and I’m looking forward to getting to know you all and becoming part of this wonderful community. Ngā mihi nui!”
THANK YOU TO OUR HOME AND SCHOOL COMMITTEE!
A huge thank you to our amazing Home and School Committee for their generous donation earlier this term of funds to support our school: $10,000! We’re incredibly grateful for their ongoing commitment to our school and the difference they make for our children and teachers.
We’re excited to let you know that the very first purchase made with their donation was a brand-new portable PA system. It made its debut at our Vogeltowner Awards assembly yesterday and worked brilliantly - with no tangled cords or dodgy microphones in sight!
OUR SCHOOL REPORT TIMELINE
You may have noticed some changes to the way we are reporting to parents. This year we concluded Term 1 with learning conferences, where teachers met with parents and whānau.
This term the changes continue, with teachers busy writing reports using a different format that aligns with the new curriculum and updated teaching expectations. To support them with this change, we are providing additional time for the preparation of these. As a result, all written reports will be sent home in the first week of Term 3.
This extension allows more time for drafting, moderating and ensuring consistency across the school. We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to strengthen our reporting processes.
PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
It is important that we know if you have a child starting school sometime in the remainder of this year. This will allow us to put organisation in place for new students - especially those starting school, and to understand our predicted roll throughout the year.
You can do this by contacting the office to confirm that we have your child on our records, or by completing an enrolment form (which can be collected from the school or downloaded off our website).
If you know of anyone else living in zone that may be looking to enrol then please share this message with them.
HIGHLANDS INTERMEDIATE ENROLMENTS 2026
For our Year 6 whānau - please note that enrolments for 2026 open on Tuesday 1st July 2025. Enrolment packs were given out to all Year 6 students today. We do have spare packs in the senior office if you require one. All information and dates can be found on the Highlands website - https://highlands.school.nz/zone-info-enrolment/enrolment/
