What is the Brightspace by D2L Portfolio?
The Brightpsace Portfolio is a secure online artifact space for individual learners and teachers provided by the Ministry of Education. This Brightspace Portfolio is a robust digital tool which allows for consistency and security for collecting artifacts of student's learning.
Learners can maintain their portfolio evidence from previous years as they progress through their educational journey (Junior Kindergarten - High School Graduation)
Teachers and students can use the app on an ipad to photograph artifacts and evidence of learning. (both pictures and audio). This allows students to develop voice and to take the lead in self-document their learning.
**Artifact can also be uploaded by students / parents from home from a computer or Chrome book.
Learning artifacts are managed by teachers through the "Portfolio Tool" within Brightspace Learning Environment. Teachers may choose which of the submitted artifacts will be added to each student's digital portfolio.
***Teachers are able to restore portfolio items that have been deleted.
Teachers can import expectations and link artifacts directly to the expectations.
In addition to reviewing the artifacts, teachers can provide feedback that is visible to the student (parent), create their own private notes (that can be later access to help to formulate comments for reports, parent communication) and to curate the artifacts by expectation, strand, frame, learning skills, Catholic Graduate expectation or any other desired category
Teachers print personalized pass cards with QR codes that students use to identify themselves to the application on the classroom device. Young learners are now able to capture photos and audio reflections by scanning their QR code without teacher assistance. The application automatically logs the student out after the learner documents their artifact.
Teachers are now able to upload curriculum expectations in the Brightspace course and attach them to learner artifacts.
In secondary school, students may also use the QR code system and also use their board device, phone or personal device to upload their own work. Once a student has uploaded content, the teacher can review, approve and curate the material in any desired fashion.
In addition, the teacher can also leave descriptive feedback and comments for students during assessment exercises.
Seamless connection to the LMS
Fully integrated into the Brightspace platform, Portfolio offers students the ability to naturally segway from creating work to showcasing their efforts, without having to step out of the Brightspace platform. From pictures and videos, to linking documents, slide presentations, or other written work created using online platforms such as Google Drive and Microsoft Office, Brightspace Portfolio streamlines a student’s ability to demonstrate their learning.
Student artifacts are sent directly to the virtual learning environment Brightspace to be moderated by student's teacher. Student artifacts are not stored on the iPad or in the app itself but are seamlessly sent through to the teacher. From this point, the teacher can moderate which artifacts will be approved and added to each student's portfolio.
