Treasurer Talk
News from the SCS Treasurer (Volume II, Issue 1)
August, 2019 Edition
Introduction
Hello, this is George Anagnostou, Treasurer of Strongsville City Schools. One District objective within our strategic plan is to actively partner and communicate with our parents and residents to strengthen school-community bonds. In an effort to improve communication about financial topics of our school district, I will be publishing a newsletter, Treasurer Talk, to address these various topics which impact our budget. This edition will focus on the District’s health insurance.
District Health Insurance
At the June 26, 2019 meeting of the Board of Education, the Board of Education took action to join the Great Lakes Council of Governments (GLCOG) health consortium effective July 1, 2019. Strongsville City Schools will join the following school districts who will make up the GLCOG: Avon, Berea, Fairview Park, and Olmsted Falls.
The purpose of the GLCOG is to create a network of school districts, which increases the number of participants and in turn, reduces the premium cost for stop loss insurance, administrative fees, and prescription drug costs. By joining the GLCOG, the District will realize approximately $500,000 in savings, of which $300,000 is one-time savings, and $200,000 is annual savings.
Since each school district within the GLCOG is self-insured, premiums for claims will be underwritten based on each individual school district’s claim experience. Our claim experience won’t impact another district and their claims experience won’t impact ours. This is another example of the District continuing to explore efficiencies that meet the needs of both staff and community.
