Graduate Student Newsletter
September 2024
Welcome! / Welcome Back!
Welcome to the first issue of your Graduate Student Newsletter for this academic year! This monthly publication is designed to keep you connected with valuable services, programs, and opportunities to meet and network with fellow graduate students.
As a graduate student, you are automatically a member of the Graduate Student Organization (GSO)—no sign-up required. We’re here to support you and root for your success, not just in academics, but in all the roles you juggle alongside being a student. Whether you're navigating the challenges of work, family, or community commitments, we hope to offer encouragement and resources to help you thrive.
We as graduate students are an important part of the Loyola community. Read on for a welcome from our university President, free resources, and leadership opportunities on some important committees.
Your Graduate Student Organization
The GSO, or Graduate Student Organization, works to support the needs and interests of all graduate students by:
- promoting campus resources
- increasing publicity of graduate student events and services
- providing concise information
- planning occasional events
This newsletter, our Facebook page, our events page, our Instagram page and gso@loyola.edu are some ways we currently connect!
The Grad Work Room
The Grad Work Room is in the Fernandez Center 031. The space includes whiteboards, large monitors where you can plug in a laptop, seating, and storage lockers for your use.
No charge to charge your device or use these lockers!
If you will be on campus, be sure to stop by and visit starting September 11th, when your GSO will be providing some snacks and resources as you begin this academic year. Use your student ID to access the room.
Leadership Opportunities
Graduate students are notorious for juggling multiples responsibilities and roles! Consider these ways to be more involved in the Loyola community:
- Graduate Student Organization Programming Board
Join us in brainstorming and planning graduate student events of interest to you. Our board members also attend events for free! About one meeting a month. - Graduate Student Representative, Academic Senate
Learn and be a part of decisions and discussions among Loyola faculty and administrators. Be a liaison between the GSO and the academic community, weighing in on resource allocation and strategic direction for the university. Meets bi-weekly, Tuesdays @ 12:15 - 1:30 on Zoom. - Graduate Student Representative, LoyolaVotes Committee
Be part of a nationwide effort to make voting informed, easy and accessible. - Graduate Student Representative, Technology Services Advisory Committee
This committee informs the University community of capabilities and changes in information technology. It also considers ways to encourage and facilitate use of technology for instruction and research.
For more information on these opportunities, contact the Graduate Student Organization at gso@loyola.edu
Resource Highlight
A good way to start is with the Graduate student website at www.loyola.edu/gradstudents. You will find all sorts of administrative, financial, academic, and personal resources, some of which we will be highlighting throughout this academic year.
Let's start with a video welcome from our university president, Terrence M. Sawyer, J.D.:
Around Campus
There are many ways to get involved with the Loyola community. Check out Wellfest on Wednesday, September 18th from 1-3pm on the Campus Quad (area in front of Jenkins and Beatty Hall) to explore resources to help all students find their path to wellness. (BTW, "Iggy" the Greyhound is our official Loyola mascot).
Watch for the October Newsletter!
Next month, we're considering a fall-themed event. Help us plan! Contact gso@loyola.edu.
