From the Principal.... Matt Clark
Good afternoon, TMS parents and guardians!
I hope you've had a fantastic week and are ready to embrace a crisp fall weekend ahead. As I mentioned in my video this morning, on Monday, we’ll be commemorating Veterans Day with our annual assembly here at Thompson. This cherished event provides us an opportunity to express our gratitude to the courageous men and women who have selflessly served our country.
All of our 8th graders, along with students who have family members (or loved ones) who have served, will gather in the gymnasium. Our 6th and 7th graders will be able to watch a live stream of the event in their first-period classrooms. During the assembly students will hear from me, their peers, and other distinguished guests as we reflect on sacrifice, appreciation, and the profound significance of this day.
Thank you for your unwavering support, and may your weekend be restful and fulfilling.
Roll Thunder!

Parent Pick-up and Drop-off
As the weather begins to turn, we are seeing an increase in the number of cars in our drop-off and pick-up lines. Please be advised of the following expectations when picking up or dropping off your children:
- Pull up as far as you can to help keep traffic moving
- Refrain from using your cell phone while driving
- Pull up close to the car in front of you, but do not park on the crosswalks
- Encourage your child to quickly exit the vehicle once parked.
- Students should only ever enter or exit a vehicle from the sidewalk
Thank you for your assistance in ensuring the safety of our students during arrival and dismissal.
Students Leaving Early from School
Cold and flu season is now upon us. We’re seeing an increase in the number of students going home sick, which is typical for this time of year. To help us best support your children while they are at school, we ask that you instruct your child to report to the nurse’s office when they are not feeling well. If a student is sick and not able to continue with their school day, you will receive a call from our Nurse’s Office to come and pick up your child. We have seen an uptick in the number of parents who show up to Thompson to pick up their student without notification or communication. Please instruct your child to go through the Nurse’s Office if they’re not feeling well and need to go home.

The Fraction Connection…
Are you afraid of fractions? The word fraction comes from the Latin word fractio, which means ‘to break’. When we use fractions, we are literally dividing whole numbers into smaller parts which means we are breaking numbers into smaller pieces. While we use fractions for many different reasons, they play an important role in graphing information. Fractions are directly connected to finding slope in mathematics. Slope is represented as a fraction where the numerator represents the "rise" (vertical change) and the denominator represents the "run" (horizontal change) between two points on a line. This type of graphing models how much the y-value changes for every unit change in the x-value. A few real-world examples of slope include: downhill cycling, ski mountains, snowboarding, rollercoasters, skate ramps, and so much more! So, don’t be afraid of fractions. They are only parts of numbers that lead to many exciting adventures!

StC Youth Commission Financial Grants
The City of St. Charles Youth Commission is reaching out to let students and student groups know that we offer financial grants to support kids working to improve the lives of kids in St. Charles! If you are working with young people on a project or you know of some young people working on something positive we'd like to hear about it. If funding is needed, maybe we can help!
The process to request a funding grant is pretty simple:
- We're interested in youth-designed, youth-driven plans, activities or projects that promote healthy lifestyles for the young people of our community. Creative interpretation of this goal is OK!
- Complete the application linked here. All instructions are included. It’s best if it’s in the student’s own words, but don't stress too much. It's really not about the perfection of the application, but it is definitely about the authenticity of the request. We feel the ideas of our young people have the best chance of resonating with other young people. It's also great if your group would like to come to the meeting when your request will be reviewed. The students can answer questions we may have.
- Applications received by the 15th of any month will be reviewed and considered for approval at our monthly meeting at the start of the next month. (FYI - No meetings in July or August).
Another thing...STC Youth Impact Award...Do you know of any D303 students making an especially significant positive contribution to the greater STC community this year? In the spring, we'll be recommending a person or persons for this special commendation at a City Council meeting. We're hoping some school personnel like you can help us identify potential candidates since you work with so many students every day. Let us know!
Please email any questions, applications, or recommendations to us at YC@stcharlesil.gov . A member of the Youth Commission will reach out to you once they receive it.
