Half Day
Real World Learning Experiences
Fourth-graders recently had a first-hand view of erosion and weathering on their visit to Independence Grove. Students spent time looking for evidence of changes to river banks and the deposition of soil and other materials. It is all part of their study of the Earth systems in the community in which they live. Additionally, the field trip reinforces a districtwide committee that is looking into the importance of field trips in providing hands-on, real-world learning experiences that enrich classroom instruction.

Happy Holidays
The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah (October 2-4), and the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur (October 11-12), are two of the most important holidays for our Jewish families. District 103 wishes our Jewish families a very Happy New Year! If you would like to learn more about the High Holiday season, you may find these short clips on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur useful.
Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated (October 31 to November 1). The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) lit outside homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. We wish all of our families who celebrate this holiday happiness and prosperity.
We understand students will be absent on religious holidays of all faiths throughout the year, and we know how important it is for us to support our students as they practice their faith. Please refer to our procedure, Homework Procedures and Religious Holidays, that District 103 uses to guide students during their absence.
Please notify your child's school in advance of a planned absence using the following methods:

Happy Custodial Worker's Appreciation Day
D103 custodians spend hours each day ensuring that classrooms and common areas are clean for students and staff. They go above and beyond in assisting teachers and students with additional tasks.
On Custodian Appreciation Day, Oct. 2, District 103 staff gives a BIG thank you to these individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure clean schools for employees and students.
“District 103 is fortunate to have a team of engaged and dedicated individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure our staff and students comfort and safety. Having these buildings ready on a daily basis for staff and students is no small task! No matter the issue, the team is always ready and prepared for whatever comes their way.
