Featured Opportunity
New Albany Food Pantry
The mission of the New Albany Food Pantry is to eliminate food insecurity within the New Albany-Plain Local School District by connecting our neighbors in need with food and other critical resources.
Volunteers are critically important to their success. Through volunteering, you can be a part of their community effort to ensure that food is provided to neighbors in need. Their programs and the families they serve continue to grow each year and they could not address their needs without the help of volunteers. Your help is vital and deeply appreciated. Below are the pre-approved service learning opportunities that students can sign up to volunteer. Visit their website at nafp.volunteerhub.com to register and learn more.
Pantry Inventory
Inventory volunteers assist the food pantry staff in taking an inventory of our current food supply and other pantry items. This is a wonderful activity for families with children, as kids can practice their counting, estimating, adding, and categorizing skills!
This activity takes approximately 1-2 hours to complete. Volunteers will be trained during their first shift.
REQUIREMENTS: Please bring your own laptop or tablet on which you can access Excel or Google Sheets.
Pantry Stocking & Sorting Volunteers:
- Receive, weigh, and record incoming donations.
- Check expiration dates, inspect, discard damaged product(s), and sort incoming food items into categories and place in appropriate areas.
- Stock and organize items on pantry shelves.
- Quality check and replenish fresh produce.
- Sort and bag fruits, vegetables, baked goods, and other items; repack bulk items to prepare for distribution.
- Should be able to lift and carry approximately 25 lbs. (the weight of 2 cases of cans) upstairs and be on your feet for approximately 2-4 hours.
- Assist with other projects assigned by Pantry Manager.
- Assist with light cleaning and straightening of the pantry.
Guidelines on expiration dates will be provided.
Food Pick-Ups
Pick up food and other items donated from local businesses and deliver them to the Pantry. We rely on the generosity of many local companies including Target, Whole Foods, Fox in the Snow, Kroger and more.
My Reflection - By Christina Duong, NAHS Senior
Not only was my volunteer experience fulfilling, but it was also enjoyable. From the start, Red Cross was very welcoming and friendly. They made sure I was comfortable, and I always felt appreciated. They would offer me food and I could work on my homework during the slow hours. If you are interested in volunteering with Red Cross, check out this link for more information.
