May 2024 Newsletter
From the North High Student Services Department:
Spring is in the air and summer is right around the corner. The last weeks of the school year are upon us, our seniors are getting ready for graduation and schedules for next year are starting to be created. Finishing strong for the school year is important for all students as it sets the tone for the next year - yes, even for the seniors as it will be their final grades for high school (and on their final transcript). If you have any concerns about grades, please contact the teacher of that class. If there are concerns about graduation status, please contact your student's assigned counselor.
North has five counselors, each with a caseload of 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. There is also a School Social Worker, School Psychologist, Reading Specialist and a Transition Specialist located within the Student Services Office. Please feel free to contact us any time with your questions or concerns.
Thank you - and see you at graduation!

If you are planning on participating in athletics next year at North High School - or just looking to get in shape - please see the attached flyer for registration for the Summer Raider Strength Program. Traditional Credit Recovery Summer School - at North High School
If you failed a required course Summer School is a great opportunity to get back on track towards graduation. Failure to make up credits that were failed in a timely manner may impact your ability to graduate on time - with your class. There are 2 different credit recovery options for students - with different structures and requirements to meet individual student needs:
1) Traditional Summer School (at Noth High School this summer). Here is the information for traditional Summer School = High School Credit Recovery. 12 days = an opportunity to earn back 1/2 credit. There are two different summer class sessions.
2) Central High School Credit Recovery Courses (see next box/below):
Contact your School Counselor with questions!
Central High School Summer Credit Recovery
Please note the two most-often confused pieces of information about our programming:
- Central is in-person learning. (Only Warriner is authorized for virtual learning)
- Students are expected to attend every day at the start of their class time until they finish the class.
I am willing to work with families/caregivers on flexibility in unusual circumstances, but can't violate these basic tenets.
Any questions, please contact me any time!

If you are looking to take credit advancement courses this summer then check out the online course options through Warriner High School. These are online classes and should not be taken if you failed a class (so NOT for credit recovery). Please plan these classes out with your counselor, so that they can advise you accordingly.

Senior Scholarship Winners - Don't Forget To Do This Very Important Thing!
Congratulations to those seniors who were awarded scholarships. One of the best/appropriate ways for seniors to show their appreciation for the awards that they were given is to write a personal "thank you" letter to the donor or organization who sponsors (or awards) the scholarship. There are wonderful families and organizations that work year-in and year-out to help students in our community continue their education. Please take the time to write a letter or appreciation to each scholarship that you have been fortunate to receive. For tips on writing a good "thank you" letter click on the link below.
Requesting Your Final Transcripts for the College You Will Be Attending
Requesting your FINAL - END OF YEAR transcripts for colleges/universities:
Any requests for transcripts to be sent to a college/university as of May 1st will be deemed as a final transcript request. These transcripts are typically sent to the colleges/universities during the end of June and after final grades have been processed at the end of the school year. If you need an initial transcript sent to a prospective college/university as of May 1st then please stop in and see Mrs. Bitney in the Student Services Center (room 104).
Follow the instructions on the attached sheet if you need to send out your transcripts to a college, university, technical college or the NCAA/NAIA. If you have any questions please stop in (or contact) the Student Services Office.
If you have utilized the Common App for the application process, then your counselor will be submitting your final transcript to the schools that are part of your Common Application. You do NOT have to also request to send your transcript for your Common App schools through Xello.

Laude Recognition Reminder for Seniors
Seniors - once again just a reminder that starting with the class of 2022 that the Sheboygan Area School District will no longer be ranking students academically nor be offering a traditional honors diploma recognition. Rather we will be recognizing students at graduation who have achieved a Laude ranking according to their "final" weighted G.P.A (after their 8th semester or the end of their senior year). The Laude recognitions are as follows:
1) Cum Laude: 4.600 - 4.999
2) Magna Cum Laude: 5.000 - 5.299
3) Summa Cum Laude: 5.300 +
You can see where you are currently at check your "Portfolio" in Skyward and reference your last report card. Look for your Cumulative Weighted GPA. Remember, your final Weighted GPA is what will be used at the end of your senior year. This semester (as every semester) counts.

Parents and Sophomores - Academic Career Plan (ACP) Spring Conferences
Spring is traditionally the time when counselors schedule the 10th grade Academic Career Plan meetings. ACP meetings invite the opportunity to discuss academic and career related goals for students while in high school and post-graduation. A review of (but not limited to) the student's goals, test scores, academic progress, ACP lesson and inventory progress, along with looking at different program and scheduling opportunities in and outside of school and different avenues of education and training post-graduation help to guide the discussion. Counselors will be sending information over the next month (by email OR mail) to families about their student's scheduled ACP meeting during the spring. If you have any questions about your student's ACP meeting please contact your student's assigned counselor.

North High Innovator Fellowship Program
The Innovator Fellowship has been rolling for more than nine years, and in that time, we have had a wide range of projects ranging from fashion to visual arts, to health and wellness, to community advocacy. IF was designed to be open to all kinds of projects. We have worked with a wide variety of students and want to be open and accessible to all learners. This year we are celebrating our new relationship with Lakeland University and plan to offer students dual credit.
Over the duration of the program, students have raised more than $200,000 and created projects that improve our collective community. Mindfulness, drug addiction, child welfare, disability awareness, feminism, political education, and music education are just a few of the topics that our scholars have explored. More importantly, fellows develop skills and have real-world life experiences that benefit them well after high school. They receive honors credit and have 1-2 hours of their day to work on the project.
This message aims to help recruit student applicants for the 2024-2025 school year. Applications are due May 6th. I am more than happy to answer any questions about the program.
Sophomores and Juniors are encouraged to apply. Students should be able to work independently and have access to transportation.
Thanks for your help,

On April 4, 2024, the Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents voted to waive the requirement for applicants to submit an ACT or SAT test score as a part of their application to the university through the spring 2027 term.
For students applying for admission for the spring 2025, fall 2025, spring 2026, fall 2026, or spring 2027 terms, including scores from either the ACT or the SAT with their application is optional.
Applicants will not be disadvantaged in our evaluation process if they do not include these scores for consideration with their application.
If an applicant chooses to include ACT or SAT test scores with their application, they must submit their official scores directly from the testing site.
We hope this will help in answering your and your students' ACT and SAT-related questions. More information on our test optional policy can be found by viewing our ACT/SAT Test Optional FAQs.
Please let us know if you have further questions.

Mental Health and Suicide Awareness
According to the CDC, each year more than 41,000 individuals die by suicide, leaving behind friends and family members to navigate the tragedy of their loss. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death among adults in the U.S. and the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-24 and these rates are increasing.
If someone you know is struggling emotionally or having a hard time, you can be the difference in getting them the help they need. It's important to take care of yourself when you are supporting someone through a difficult time, as this may stir up difficult emotions. If it does, please reach out for support yourself. Some warning signs may help you determine if a loved one is at risk for suicide, especially if the behavior is new, has increased, or seems related to a painful event, loss, or change. If you or someone you know needs support now, exhibits any of the behaviors listed below, call or text 988 or chat by going to 988lifeline.org. Students - you can also see your counselor if you are worried about yourself or anyone else.
Do They Need Your Help? Know the warning signs:
- Talking about wanting to die or to kill themselves
- Looking for a way to kill themselves, like searching online or buying a gun
- Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live
- Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
- Talking about being a burden to others
- Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs
- Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly
- Sleeping too little or too much
- Withdrawing or isolating themselves
- Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge
- Extreme mood swings

Students riding Shoreline Metro buses!
If you ride the Shoreline Metro Bus Service
The primary method for utilizing this program is through a phone. If you have a phone you will not receive a paper voucher.
Paper vouchers are ONLY for students who do not have a phone. Paper vouchers will not be accepted for students that have forgotten their phone or have a dead phone. (Phones can be charged on Shoreline Metro’s buses). If you do not have your phone you will have to pay the student fare.
Vouchers for students that already have a paper bus pass will not be given a new voucher each week. If a student is losing their bus pass continually, Shoreline Metro will only accept 1 voucher per month, per student. Shoreline Metro tracks all vouchers and may deny the student if this practice continues.
For more info, click here or see Mrs. Ross in the Main Office.
