AMORE ROSES
Newstead, Wednesday, November 20
The Amoré Rose tale started in 2006 in Osaka, Japan. Janette was there for the World Rose Convention and her husband, Paul, for a Property Conference. Early one evening Paul innocently struck up a conversation with a man who turned out to be Frank Bernadella, an acclaimed American rose breeder who was lamenting that he couldn’t get any of his award-winning miniature roses into the NZ market. After some more digging, it turned out that the very same issue was being faced by international breeders in Australia, Belgium, Germany, France, Netherlands, Canada, and Ireland – they just couldn’t get their product into NZ.
Janette and Paul saw an exciting opportunity to bring the best roses in the world into our market, so their rose adventure began.
Initially, their business consisted of importing budwood from international growers, performing a rigorous Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) quarantine process, and then partnering with an established rose grower to grow and market the product. Unfortunately, the length of time to get from budwood to market was so long that the partnership folded. Janette had a difficult decision to make; walk away from her rose dream or dive headlong into a whole new world – the commercial rose growing business.
The couple sold everything they could to purchase 17 acres and set up 6 quarantine units and 188 assessment gardens to assess roses from all around the world.
in 2017, Amoré Roses began selling their first range of international roses in the NZ market. Thanks to their persistence and commitment , NZ now has rose breeds that truly are the best in the world.
