Principal's Ponderings
At Connect Academy, being a good digital citizen is at the core of our hybrid learning environment. As students navigate both in-person and online spaces, it’s essential that they practice safety, respect, and responsibility when interacting online. This includes safeguarding personal information, thinking critically about the content they engage with, and being mindful of how their words and actions impact others in the digital space. We teach students to build healthy online habits, use technology as a tool for learning, and develop a positive digital footprint that reflects their values.
As a hybrid school, Connect Academy has a unique opportunity to model what successful online learning can look like. Our students not only have the chance to be leaders in online safety and etiquette, but they can also explore the full potential of hybrid learning. By fostering collaboration, curiosity, and creativity in virtual spaces, we show what’s possible in a connected world. Through thoughtful engagement and digital awareness, our students are paving the way for future learners and setting the standard for online education.
Here are five questions to ask your student about how they can be good digital citizens:
- How do you decide what personal information is safe to share online and what should stay private?
- What steps do you take to ensure that the websites and apps you use are trustworthy and secure?
- How do you handle situations when you see or experience something inappropriate or harmful online?
- What does being respectful to others look like when you’re communicating in online spaces, like during Zoom meetings or in chat groups?
- How can you make sure that the things you post or share online reflect who you are and the values you believe in?
Teachers' Tomes
Hello Connect Academy Families!
We hope this newsletter finds you well! As we dive deeper into the school year, we have some exciting events and activities lined up that we want to share with you.
Please mark your calendars with the following important dates:
Parent conferences will be scheduled for the week of October 28 - November 1, 2024. Poway Unified District requires a parent conference for every student with a C- or lower. Please keep an eye out for an email from our team with a time and date of your scheduled conference! Of course, all parents are welcome to conference with us! If you do not receive an email and would like a conference, please let us know. The adjusted school day schedule for Conference Week can be found HERE.
Progress Notices will be coming out by the end of the week!
20 Day Apportionment Window 3 began on October 18 and will close on November 15, 2024
Interactive Feudalism Role-Playing Experience
This week during our in-person day, our students will embark on a unique interactive role-playing experience centered around feudalism. They will step into the shoes of lords, knights, and peasants to understand the dynamics of this historical period. This hands-on activity will not only make learning fun but also deepen their understanding of social structures and history.
Reflection Time for Students
This week, we are dedicating time for our students to engage in reflection about their learning experiences thus far this year. This important activity allows them to think critically about what they have learned, the challenges they have faced, and the progress they have made. During this reflection time, students will identify subjects or skills they feel confident in, as well as areas where they would like to improve. By setting specific goals for the upcoming months, they can stay focused and motivated in their learning journey. We encourage you to discuss these reflections and goals with your child, as sharing their thoughts can foster a supportive environment both at home and in school.
We appreciate your continued support and involvement in our school community. Together, we are creating a vibrant and engaging environment for our students to thrive. If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to reach out.
Respectfully,
Mr. Gizzo & Mrs. Matos

Mr. Bibby's Tip of the Week: Building Community
Building a sense of community in an online class can be challenging, but it’s essential for creating a positive and supportive learning environment. Here are some strategies to help foster belonging:
Introduce Yourself: Take the time to share something about yourself in class discussions or forums. Whether it’s your interests, hobbies, or experiences, letting others get to know you can create connections.
Engage in Class Discussions: Actively participate in discussions, whether it’s through chat, breakout rooms, or discussion boards. Engaging with your classmates and acknowledging their contributions helps build a sense of community.
Be Supportive: Encourage and support your classmates. Offer constructive feedback and show appreciation for their ideas. Positive interactions help create an inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels valued.
Collaborate with Peers: Form study groups or collaborate on assignments when possible. Working together builds stronger connections and helps you feel more connected to your classmates.
Be Present: Keep your camera on during class (if possible) and show that you’re engaged. Non-verbal cues like nodding and smiling can help make you and others feel more connected.
Respect and Listen: Show respect for your classmates by listening actively and being open to different perspectives. Respectful communication fosters an environment where everyone feels safe to share their thoughts.
Use Positive Language: Whether in chat, discussions, or emails, use positive and encouraging language when interacting with others. Small acts of kindness go a long way in making others feel welcome and included.
By making an effort to connect with your classmates and build a positive learning environment, you help create a space where everyone feels they belong.
