Weekly News - September 29, 2023
Dear Middlebrook Families,
Soon conferences will be upon us allowing time for teachers and families to meet and discuss your child's time at Middlebrook. Below is a link to assist you in scheduling your time with your child's teacher. Conferences are on October 24 or 26, as well as November 2. We know the staff looks forward to sharing the successes they have witnessed since the onset of the year.

Did you know that September 30 is National Love People Day? It is a day where we can offer kindness, compassion and care to the people in our homes and within the community. Perhaps this weekend each of us can find time to share our gifts, offer companionship or give a hug to those we cherish. Certainly at Middlebrook, we strive to show kindness in all we do as a community.
Kind regards,
Ms. Ponte and Ms. Molloy
A Message from our Attendance Committee
As a school community, we continually strive to promote regular attendance here at Middlebrook. We welcome and appreciate open communication between school and home; therefore, please reach out if you need assistance with getting your child to school each day and in a timely fashion. Parent and school partnerships enable us to best support our students to ensure success at school.
The attendance committee met at the end of the 2nd week of school to review schoolwide attendance data and sent letters to those that were deemed chronically absent. For your information, the committee will provide communication for those that continue to be categorized as "chronically absent" at the end of each month.
"Chronically absent is defined as "a child who accumulated a total number of absences at any time during the school year that is equal to or greater than ten percent (10%) of the total number of days that such student has been enrolled at the school during the school year."
Please refer to board policy 5113.1 on our website for more information. https://www.trumbullps.org/board-of-education/policy
As always, thank you for your support.
A Message from our Student Council Reps
We are excited to start the process of determining our 5th Grade Student Council Senators for the 2023-2024 school year!
This week, we spoke to the fifth graders to provide an overview of the roles and responsibilities that our six senators will carry out throughout the year. The Student Council runs many drives, spirit days and fundraisers. We also focus on developing leadership skills and attend a student leadership conference. Information sheets are available in Mrs. Ginand's room.
If a 5th grade student is interested in running for a Student Council position, they should adhere to the following timeline:
- An essay, answering the question "Why do you feel you would be a good candidate for the student council senate?", should be written and submitted to Mrs. Ginand no later than Thursday October 5th.
- Completed essays and teacher rubrics will be reviewed, and students will be notified on October 6th if they are eligible to deliver a speech.
- Speeches will be presented on October 12th at an assembly for 3rd ,4th and 5th graders. Voting will take place afterwards.
- The six senators will be announced on Friday October 13th.

A Message from Nurse Jeanne
Health Screening will be conducted on:
Tuesday October 17th, Wednesday October 18th, and Thursday October 19th.
Trumbull Schools provides health screenings based on recommendations from the Connecticut State Department of Education. Hearing and Vision Screening will be completed for students in grades K, 1, 3, 4, 5. Postural Scoliosis will be completed for female students in grade 5 (please have your child wear a tank top/bra under clothing).
Any of the mandated screenings which are documented on a Physical Examination form submitted to the school nurse performed during the current school year will be used as the valid screening for that year. If the results of any screening tests indicate further evaluation, the school will notify the parent/guardian and recommend further medical evaluation of the suspected problem. If the nurse is unable to test a student the parent/guardian will be notified.
If a parent/guardian does not want a student to participate in any of the screenings they should notify the school nurse in writing.

PTA Fundraisers
Sneaker Drive!
Did you know that your gently worn sneakers could help Middlebrook?
Well, they can and here’s how…Our school is participating in a fundraiser where there is nothing to buy or sell; all we need is your support and your gently worn, used, or new sneakers (children's and adult's)!
Here’s how you can help:
Start in your closets at home and gather as many pairs of sneakers that you no longer want; maybe you’ve out-grown them, they’re out of style, or out of season. Every pair counts!
The sneakers that we collect will help raise money to support our program AND will help our environment by keeping sneakers out of landfills.
We will be setting up a box in the lobby soon, but start saving them now!
Cow Chip Fundraiser
Grab your Cow Chip Squares for our first ever fundraiser at Guardians Farm in Southbury, coming up on November 4 (new date!)
Buy your squares here: https://middlebrookelementarypta.membershiptoolkit.com/form/m/255602
If we have any squares left, we will be opening up this event to the Trumbull Community to purchase----so get your tickets today!!!
Fathers Club
As mentioned above, the next two dates for Fathers Club will be October 12 and 19 at 7:15. Please come join as we plan for Middlebrook's wildly popular ZOMBIEBROOK! It takes many hands to make this evening a success!
