Jan. 21st-28th SNYM News
Welcome to the St. Nick's Youth Ministry Weekly Update
ORDINARY TIME
Christmas Time and Easter Time highlight the central mysteries of the Paschal Mystery, namely, the incarnation, death on the cross, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ, and the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
The Sundays and weeks of Ordinary Time, on the other hand, take us through the life of Christ.
This is the time of conversion.
This is living the life of Christ.
Ordinary Time is a time for growth and maturation, a time in which the mystery of Christ is called to penetrate ever more deeply into history until all things are finally caught up in Christ.
The goal, toward which all of history is directed, is represented by the final Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.

MIDDLE SCHOOL/ EDGE GROUP
RECAP FOR JAN. 21
We began our morning together in Adoration led by Father Dominik. We were so happy to have the return of Nick to the Youth Room, and grateful to have him lead us in song while we experienced the gift of being closer to God in the presence of Jesus Christ. See photos below.
Next, we began our 6th session, but the 9th of Symbolon, Mary and the Saints. This is because completing the sessions in this order will actually be more in line with the liturgical calendar for the rest of our year in Religious Ed rather than following how they are ordered in Symbolon. While this may sound confusing, we believe it will actually make more sense to the Youth as they will be able to recognize at mass what they learn in class, and their sessions will be linked to the upcoming liturgical seasons & feast days.
We had another change to our session in that I am now creating slides for the Youth to have a visual to read along as we cover the discussion prompts provided by Symbolon. This proved to be a tremendous help that resulted in more of the Youth participating and contributing to the discussion! Please click the links below to view the session and the discussion slides.
We ended class with a new game, Head Shoulders Knees CUPS! As suspected, the Youth were very energetic and competitive. I think you will agree that it is as much fun for us to watch them as it was for them to play! See video below.

HIGH SCHOOL/ YOUTH GROUP
RECAP FOR JAN. 21
We started our afternoon together welcoming back a few of our Teens who we had missed dearly, but were also missing a few others as they were still traveling on their March for Life trip. We then spent blessed time in the presence of Christ with Adoration led by Father Dominik. See photos below.
Next, we snacked on English Muffin pizzas and began the third session of the God Is... Collection, God Is Alive. The video and slides sparked extraordinary questions and conversation within the group. It was not only an informative session, but also a lively discussion appreciated by all.
They shared their thoughts and prior knowledge of the Cathecism, the story of Lazurus, and were very thoughtful in their repsonses to the discussion prompts. It is a delight to hear their contributions and listen to them learning from each other. See video and slides below.
We then played another new game; Rock Paper Scissors SPLITS! In the video you will see why I warned them to stretch before we played, and the hilarity of them all trying so hard to win this new game! See video and photos below.

INFORMATION
YOUTH MINISTRY VOLUNTEERS
Per the Diocese policy for the safety of everyone, a minimum of 2 adults are required to be present for all Youth Ministry activities.
Ideally we would have at least 4-6 volunteers (preferably more), allowing for at least 1 assistant present for the HSYG one Sunday per month. We are also still in need of at least 1 more assistant for the EDGE class.
While the search to locate others who have current certification with the Diocese is ongoing, we have reached a point where we need to request that parents assist on a rotating basis so that we can continue to safely offer HSYG.
Please consider completing your certification, and/ or asking individuals who you think would be a willing volunteer. Or, you can submit suggestions for me to contact.
REQUIRED BY THE DIOCESE
All youth ministry volunteers must have current certification for the course of Serving Vulnerable Populations and a Criminal History Record Check on file with the Diocese. More information can be found by visiting Adult Training on the Diocese of Fairbanks website. Diocese of Fairbanks - Adult Training - Fairbanks, AK
