Millswood Middle School News:
Lodi Elks Lodge supports Millswood Middle School.
Thank you Lodi Elks Lodge for you generous donation to Millswood! We look forward to the opportunities this grant will bring our students. We are blessed and grateful to have this type of support from our community!
Book Fair:
The Book Fair is here all week, Nov 18-22. The Book Fair eWallet is the way to pay. Go cash free with eWallet, the digital payment option that makes shopping the Fair easier.
Chromebook Care Plan!
It's not too late to purchase the Chromebook Care Plan. This is chromebook insurance that covers your student's chromebook for the current school year. Yearly cost is $25. If you do not use the insurance this year, the cost next year is reduced to $20. Please have your student take their chromebook to the library to be checked for damage, and then you can pay with cash or check at Millswood or with credit card on the district website at the Family Payment Center. This is a great deal and protects the chromebook from accidental damages.
Student Leadership News:
Basketball Noon League is up and running. Our tournament will continue through the rest of the quarter.
Thankful Grams will be sold all week. Each Thankful Gram includes a card and a piece of candy and will be delivered to friends during their 6th period class. Students can pick up order forms from Leadership at lunch and return them with their payment by Friday for delivery on the 26th. They will be sold for 50 cents each, or 3 for $1. Buy early, before they sell out!
Our club snowman competition starts Monday! We can't wait to see the snowmen that our clubs create!
From Our Teachers:
- This quarter, 8th grade students are playing and developing their skills into the fast-growing sport of Pickleball. The fundamentals, including serving, scoring, and strategies are all covered during this Unit, and Grizzlies are demonstrating agility, hand-eye coordination, and teamwork while having a lot of fun on Millswood's blacktop courts. Game on!
- Millswood Music students will be selling poinsettias to fundraise for their spring trip! Please support our musicians by buying a small poinsettia for $8, a medium size for $15 or a large for $25
Writing skills and accountability for writing:
To prepare students for the rigors of writing at the high school level and beyond, the English department here at Millswood provides daily opportunities to practice and engage in academic writing. The goal to normalize writing is evident, daily. The students who struggle the most with academic writing have been the first to resort to AI to produce written responses. These students also struggle to read grade level texts. "If they don't read the text, they will not have meat for their writing." Though AI can be used as a tool to scaffold writing, it is not an accurate representation of a student's authentic voice.
The English department prepares writing guides, provides in-class instruction and modeling, and offers after-school writing support to better serve ALL students. As such, the use of AI has not been, and will not be an option in lieu of a student's own original, authentic work.
Parents and guardians, we need you to support the writing skills of your students. Here's how you can help our students stay accountable:
Ask them to show you, and even discuss their writing products with you.
Remind them of the consequences of plagiarism.
Encourage them to develop creativity and their own academic voice.
Thank you ,
7th Grade ELA team
From Our Counselors-
-Parents and guardians, please continue to check your student’s grades in Aeries and encourage them to make up missing assignments their teachers will still accept. It is no coincidence that on average, students have higher GPAs when parents are checking Aeries on a regular basis; your involvement makes a big difference!
-On November 26th all 8th grade students will hear a presentation in PE about grades, promotion, how to read a transcript and getting ready for high school.
-Over the next two weeks, Mrs. Gonzalez will be visiting 7th grade ELA classes to present on why grades matter, how to calculate GPA, and how to read a transcript. Challenge your student to practice what they learn at home by showing you how to find their GPA using their current grades in Aeries.
-The Anxiety Relief For Teens group meets every Tuesday at 7:40am. Students will learn effective strategies to deal with anxiety, stress and negativity. If you are interested in having your child participate, please contact Mrs. Kemp, counselor.
-A new student club is starting up! The Creative Journaling Club meets every Friday morning at 7:40am in the library. All students are welcome to attend. Bring a notebook or journal to get started in learning creative ways to document your life through art. Contact Mrs. Kemp, counselor, for more details.
