School Bus Safety
Haslett Public Schools is committed to ensuring the safety of every student, especially during their daily commute. We urge all community members to be vigilant and follow Michigan's laws regarding school bus safety. According to state law, drivers must come to a complete stop at least 20 feet from a school bus when its red lights are flashing and stop arm is extended, unless driving in the opposite direction on a divided highway. Passing a stopped school bus is not only illegal but also incredibly dangerous, putting children at risk of serious injury or even death.
Remember that it takes a bus significantly longer to come to a complete stop than a car. Always anticipate the possibility of a bus stopping and be prepared to react accordingly. By adhering to these laws and practicing safe driving habits, we can create a safe environment for our students.
Haslett Public Schools encourages parents to discuss bus safety with their children and emphasize the importance of following the bus driver's instructions. Let's work together to keep our students safe and ensure a positive school experience for everyone.
The State of Michigan has provided a few tips regarding school bus safety below:
Safety Tips for Drivers
Prepare to stop when a slowing bus has its overhead yellow lights flashing
Stop at least 20 feet away from buses when red lights are flashing, unless driving in the opposite direction on a divided highway
Slow down in or near school and residential areas
Look for clues-such as safety patrols, crossing guards, bicycles, and playgrounds - that indicate children might be in the area
Watch for children between parked cars and other objects
School Buses are like Traffic Signals
When overhead lights are flashing YELLOW: Prepare to Stop
When overhead lights are flashing RED: Stop
When hazard warning lights are flashing: Proceed with Caution
School Bus Safety Tips for Students
Always stay in sight of the bus driver
Do not hurry off the bus; check traffic first
Do not go back to the bus after exiting
National School Bus Safety week is the third week of October. Let's celebrate this week by reviewing Safe Bus Procedures!
Student Online Safety
Haslett Public Schools utilizes Securly, an Internet filtering and monitoring solution, to ensure the safety and well-being of students while using school devices. Securly goes beyond traditional Internet filtering by providing real-time alerts for online activities that indicate potential self-harm or bullying.
As a parent, you can use the Securly Home app to stay informed of your child's online activity at school. By downloading the app, you can view a report summarizing your child's Internet activity, including websites visited and search terms used. Most importantly, the Securly Home app will notify you of flagged activities related to self-harm or bullying, allowing you to provide support and guidance to your child.
To get started, download the Securly Home app from the App Store or Google Play. Once installed, create your account using the email address you have on file with the school. Your children will automatically link to your account. By partnering with Securly, Haslett Public Schools and parents can work together to help ensure a safe online environment for students.
