Safe Routes to Schools Events
This spring, Royal Oak Schools is proud to announce the Safe Routes to School program. On the flyer below you will find information about our Oakland Safe Routes to School events, a student signup (link to a Google Form included) and a parent volunteer signup (sign up genius for those parents interested in assisting our students). All students who participate must be signed up for the date(s) they are participating and have a completed consent form. Please sign up your students at least 24 hours prior to the events in which they are participating.
Safe Routes to School is a state-wide initiative to provide our children with a safe, fun and social way to get to school, while getting physical activity. Families will drop their children off at Faith Christian Church and check them in before Oakland Staff and volunteers travel with the students to school.
If you are able, please consider volunteering as an escort for one or all of our three events(please see the attached sign up genius). You will need to make sure that you are on the approved volunteer list.
Mental Health Awareness Month
During the month of May, we would like to encourage all of our students, staff and families to acknowledge and support the need for better mental health by wearing the color green on Mondays. May is mental health awareness month. Green represents renewal, hope, and vitality and is the official color for mental health awareness.

Cereal Drive for Children's Hospital
We’re excited to announce that Oakland Elementary will be participating in the 2025 Children’s Hospital Cereal Drive! Now more than ever, children in Southeast Michigan need access to healthy breakfast options throughout the summer. Help us make a difference by donating boxes of cereal to support local families in need. Every box counts! You can drop off the boxes in the front office or with your child's classroom teacher.

First Day of School Supplies!
Once again this year we are partnering with 1st Day School Supplies to offer an easy way for parents to purchase school supplies for their kids for the upcoming school year. The kits are available for purchase online and will be delivered to school before the start of the new school year. Your student will show up on the first day of school and their supply kit will be waiting for them in their classroom.
Online ordering is open now through July 1st. I know it seems early, but before you know it, summer will be here. It's important you order your supplies before it's too late or supplies run out. Start the school year with the exact supplies your teacher requested and give your child the confidence they need to conquer next year! Order today! Please reach out if you have any questions.

Volunteer Reminder
This spring there will be many opportunities for adult family members to volunteer for field day, book fair, field trips, and other class events. This is a friendly reminder that you must have a Volunteer Request Form filled out for the current school year and be approved through that process. The process can take up to two weeks, so please plan ahead.
Gun Locks
February marked the one year anniversary of the Michigan Secure Storage Law. As part of this initiative the Michigan State Police has provided Royal Oak Schools with a supply of gun locks to distribute to community members who need them. If you have unsecured weapons in your home, you can receive a free gun lock with no questions asked by stopping by the District Administrative Offices Building at 800 DeVillen, Royal Oak, or by stopping in the main office at Oakland. Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Nell or Mr. Taylor can assist you.
According to BeSMARTforKids.org:
Firearms are the leading cause of death for American children and teens.
Every year, nearly 360 children in the US under the age of 18 gain access to a firearm and unintentionally shoot themselves or someone else.
More than 700 children living in America die by gun suicide every year, and secure storage can play a crucial role in preventing those deaths.
3/4 of school shooters acquired their firearm from the home of a parent or close relative.
Enrollment for Kindergarten/Developmental Kindergarten
Kindergarten enrollment for the 2025-2026 school year begins on Monday, February 3, 2025. District-wide enrollment for all kindergarten programs, including Developmental Kindergarten, is processed through our Central Enrollment Office. All enrollments into Royal Oak Schools are done online.
Kindergarten Age Requirements
A resident child must be five (5) years of age on or before September 1st in order to be eligible to attend kindergarten.
If a child is not five (5) years of age by the September 1st enrollment eligibility date, but will be five (5) years of age no later than December 1st, the parent/guardian may still enroll the child in kindergarten. The parent must notify the school district, in writing, prior to the beginning of the school year. Notification, by way of a completed Kindergarten Age Waiver, must be received in order for a child born between September 1 and December 1 to be enrolled in kindergarten.
If you need assistance navigating the online process or do not have a home computer, please call Theresa Baughman at 248-435-8400 x 1260. Appointments are highly recommended if you'd like to enroll in person.

Professional Learning Mornings
Professional Learning Mornings or "Late Starts" are days when staff report 30 minutes earlier than normal and students report 60 minutes later. Staff have the opportunity to engage in 90 minutes of collaboration and learning. On these Wednesday mornings the first bell will ring at 9:20 a.m. with classes starting at 9:25 a.m. Upcoming Late Starts will be:
- January 29th
- February 5th 26th
Birthday Recognition
Consistent with health and wellness goals and cognizant of various student and staff allergies, Royal Oak Elementary schools recognize student birthdays with non-food-based celebrations. We do recognize birthdays as special days and will recognize a child’s birthday with individual recognition by the classroom teacher. Each teacher will inform you of the specific classroom birthday recognition practice. The students will also have their names announced on the school broadcast and receive a birthday pencil from the office. Please do NOT send food or beverages as birthday treats.
Special Message on School Attendance
Please see the August 18th, 2023 edition of the Roadrunner Report for a special message about attendance.
