What Will We Be Learning This Week?
Math
In math this week we have continued our study of decimals. Students should know how to read/write decimals, compare decimals, order decimals, and add/subtract decimals. Next week students will be working in guided math groups/centers practicing these skills.
Science
Students have observed 12 samples of rocks, classified them according to properties, and recorded their observations. Next week students will learn about three different types of rocks and how they are formed.
Language Arts
Students will also have the opportunity to complete an extra credit project as detailed below:
Greek Mythology Extra Credit Project
We are finishing our Greek Mythology unit in our reading class. Students will be given the opportunity to complete the optional extra credit project below for a 10 point boost on the grade for the Discovery Educational Board that we are creating this week (up to 110%). This boost will be applied retroactively since the extra credit projects are not due until after we complete our board. The extra credit projects are due by Friday, March 4, and must be completed at home. Late or incomplete projects will not be accepted. Please contact me if you have any questions.
Greek Mythology Board Game
You will create a board game based on what you have learned about Greek mythology. You may focus on the Greek gods or any of the myths that we have read aloud or possibly in your guided reading group. You may also do outside research on myths/Greek gods to incorporate into your game.
The finished product must be a playable board game that includes the following:
detailed rulebook (student written)
game board (fully decorated, student created)
game pieces/tokens (student created)
any other necessary pieces, possibly including cards (student created), dice, spinners, etc.

Grandfather Mountain Field Trip
Just another reminder that you must have a background check on file in our front office if you would like to chaperone our Grandfather Mountain field trip on April 12th. Background checks are good for 2 years from the time of approval, and I am finding that some of your checks have expired. To check to see if your background check is current, please email Debbie Meyers at Deborah_Meyers@catawbaschools.net or call her in the front office at 466.7065. If you would like a form to have a check completed, let Ms. Ellis know and we will send an application home with your child. This takes several weeks to process, so please fill one out as soon as possible!
