KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
Happy January 19th! We packed a lot into the three school days this week. Our staff also had the opportunity to attend various Professional Development sessions on Tuesday, learning more about content specific to their work as well as working together in their teams for planning and data analysis.
Northwood’s continued focus on reading remains strong as grade levels dive into reading for a variety of purposes. At school, students use and review texts throughout the instructional day to apply reading strategies, respond to what is contained within texts, learn and apply new vocabulary, and explore new content. We also find time for students to read books to grow the pure love of reading and to spark their imaginations. I had the pleasure of being with a group of second graders this week that were comparing features of fiction and non-fiction books. They were bouncing out of their seats with excitement as they wanted to look through ALL the books that the teacher was sharing with them. If you’re looking for ways that you can continue to spark the love of reading at home, you can set specific reading routines or reading times for your family. Trips to the library to pick out new books can be a fun adventure on chilly winter weekends. New adventures are always just a page away.
With gratitude,
Heather Rucker
ART WITH MRS. KATZIN
Northwood Explorers are in the middle of their ceramics unit in Art. Last week, students created clay sculptures: kindergarteners made penguins, first graders made lady bugs, second graders made turtles, third graders made monsters, fourth graders made cupcakes, and fifth graders designed a wall hanging. This week and next week, students will paint their creations and bring them home. Clay is everyone's favorite! Be sure to ask your child about their artwork and the process of creating clay art.

- The absence will be marked Unexcused in IC until this form is completed and turned in to the Assistant Principal. Once the teacher has signed that the assignment is complete and hands this form into the office, the absence will change to PR (Participate Remote).
PRE-APPROVED ABSENCE FORM
Pre-Approved Absence Request Form
Students may request Pre-Approved Absences for family events and special family circumstances. Consideration for Pre-Approved Absences will be based on the following criteria.
- Pre-Approved Absence Request Form is received 5 days prior to planned absence.
- Attendance review indicates student is not at-risk of chronic absenteeism. Please note that students with 17 or more absences per year fall within the chronic absenteeism attendance band. Even though they are pre-approved, these absences count towards the 17.

CAFE SERVES FARM FRESH TOMATOES AT LUNCH ALL JANUARY
For the entire month of January, juicy, farm fresh tomatoes served at lunch are part of Fulton County’s School Nutrition Harvest of the Month Program. These locally grown tomatoes are heading straight from a family farm to your plate. Because it’s grown closer to home it helps support our local farmers and takes less fuel to get it to our café. Not only are these locally grown tomatoes good for the environment, but also, tomatoes are great for your body, being an excellent source of vitamin A! Did you know: Georgia is a top product of fresh market tomatoes?! Botanically, the tomato is a fruit, but in cooking it is considered a vegetable. Try the freshly harvested tomatoes in your signature side salads this January!
