Assistant Principal's Message
Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed their Spring Break. Please see the below information regarding the Georgia Milestones Parent Resources and Carpool Reminders.
Georgia Milestones
The Georgia Milestones assessment for our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will be during the window of 4/29 through 5/10. We will have a virtual parent coffee for about the Milestones Assessment with more information. Please join us, Friday, April 19th at 9:00 a.m. on Teams Click here to join the meeting.
Please also see the attachment for Georgia Milestones Parent Resources.
Carpool Reminders
Thank you to everyone for continued patience with our carpool process, we are hopeful that it will only get better once the Jones Bridge construction is complete. As a reminder, nearly half of our families use the carpool transportation option in the morning, please keep in mind the following during carpool:
- If there is no officer, please turn right when exiting onto Jones Bridge. This helps tremendously with getting cars out of the lot.
- When turning right onto Jones Bridge Road from Buice Road, please remember to yield to vehicles with a green arrow turning left from Buice road.
- Have your student get out in the drop off zone, and pull all the way forward.
- Consider arriving closer to or before 7:20 to avoid the risk of being tardy.
PBIS At-Home Tip of the Week
Intrinsic Motivation:
*Praising effort rather than success or innate abilities. If you tell a child he or she is so smart, then it is very realistic that they could abandon a task that does not come easy to them. Rather, praising them for their efforts despite the outcome will build their confidence in their ability to work hard for something that is important to them.
*Pointing out progress. Attention spans in young children arenβt often long, so pointing out milestones they are reaching along the way can be helpful in showing them how far theyβve come. Examples of this include exclaiming with excitement the number of books they have read this week or pointing out that they only have one chore left to do. Breaking large tasks into smaller parts helps kids (and adults!) to stay focused. Feeling successful will breed motivation to reach the next goal.
* Encouraging autonomy by offering choices and encouraging problem solving. Having a child take ownership in a task is a huge part of success in getting it completed. This helps kids feel empowered, and that they can, in fact, handle more situations themselves than they might believe.
* Limiting extrinsic motivators. Opting for celebration over a true reward can help children recognize their feelings of self-satisfaction and pride, leading them to want to repeat the action (intrinsic) rather than having them focused on and motivated by a toy/treat/etc. π
* Have realistic expectations and recognize the good things your kids are doing and praising them on that rather than focusing in on their shortcomings. We all have off days (kids included!), so giving grace and having realistic expectations for behavior/focus/motivation is very important. Correcting poor behavior comes more naturally to a lot of us parents, but chances are youβll see more benefits in your house for celebrating positive actions rather than punishing poor choices. π

It is time for the election of new members to our School Governance Council. The School Governance Council has one parent position open for election starting in July 2024. It is a two-year term.
Our School Governance Council (SGC) plays a critical role in the success of our school. If you are interested in running for a position on the School Governance Council, please complete and submit a Parent Candidate Form . Forms will be available on Monday, February 5th.
We are very excited about the work of our SGC. We hope that you will consider running for a position!
