Wasco Weekly
THE STRENGTH OF THE WOLF IS ITS PACK
February 24, 2023
Wasco Families,
Our school library helps Wasco students achieve their literacy goals. This upcoming week, our LRC (Library Resource Center) kicks off Read Across America Week with a fun challenge. Next week Wasco Elementary will participate in a district-wide book competition called March Book Madness. Each week, throughout the month of March, students will view books that have been recorded by the elementary LRC Directors and Youth Services Librarians at the St. Charles Public Library. Students will use Google Forms to vote for their favorite of two books, eliminating books in a bracket-style competition. All students will have the chance to participate in this fun reading promotion. The winner will be announced March 25th!
I am sharing this information with families so you have an opportunity to encourage your child by ensuring they have library books, reading time, and plenty of conversation about their reading in the home. Our work together valuing and supporting a rich reading environment at school and home communicates our shared expectations for reading practice and achievement.
Kind Regards,
Principal Stephanie Brennan

5 Essentials Survey - 2023 Illinois Parent Survey
Parents/Guardians-Would you help us by taking the survey?
District 303 participates in the annual Illinois 5Essentials Survey that collects feedback from our students, teachers, and parents. Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will give you the opportunity to share your thoughts on important elements of school effectiveness. The responses will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide our improvement efforts. All responses are confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.
The Parent Survey is currently open and will remain so through March 30, 2023. To take the survey, please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey. As part of this communication, we have included a link to graphics of the login page with additional information about how to access the survey. Most notably, make sure you enter Kane County in the box for county even if your home or your child’s school is in DuPage County. This will allow you to correctly select your child’s school.
All District 303 teachers, as well as students in 4th through 12th grades, are being asked to complete this survey. 5Essentials Reports will be generated for schools if their teachers and/or students meet the response rate threshold of 50 percent. Teachers will work with students to assist them with logging in and taking the student survey.
On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey is administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:
Effective Leaders
Collaborative Teachers
Involved Families
Supportive Environments
Ambitious Instruction
We value your feedback and appreciate you taking the time to provide us with your input.
For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, or if you have any questions or concerns, please contact 5Essentials Client Services at 1-866-440-1874 or 5essentials@uchicago.edu.
Planning for next School Year- Action item for you
If you have suggestions, or information to share about your child’s placement, you can complete this survey. The survey has space for you to share your observations about your child’s learning needs and grouping considerations. The survey will remain open until April 7th and I will use the information as I review the class lists created by Wasco staff. I cannot guarantee that all requests will be met, however our focus is ensuring that your child has his/her best learning environment. We are here to arrange our resources so that each child has the best opportunity to succeed during their school day.
By the way, if you have a friend or neighbor with a little one, will you please spread the word- we have started kindergarten registration?
Cougars Reading Club
Beginning February 6, 2023 and ending March 31, 2023 Wasco will be participating in Cougars Reading Club, a reading incentive sponsored by the Kane County Cougars baseball team. Your child will have the opportunity to improve his or her reading skills while earning a ticket to a Cougar game! See the attached link below for more information.
